Wilcox, Kalbian Lead Women’s Lacrosse To Fifth Straight Win

HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 27, 2015) – Junior Erika Wilcox and sophomore Kathleen Kalbian combined for 13 points to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team past Utica College 17-8 in Empire 8 conference action on Friday.

The Ducks (5-1, 2-0 E8) scored the first two goals of the contest just 1:48 in, as senior Caitlyn Hughes and freshman Cami Santor scored 30 seconds apart. Utica answered back to tie the game on goals by junior Courtney Wheeler and freshman Brooke Miller. Stevens then scored five of the next eight markers with Hughes and Wilcox each connecting twice. The Pioneers (4-3, 0-1 Empire 8) trimmed the deficit to 8-5 on a goal by senior Morgan DuPont with 54 seconds left in the opening half.

Stevens poured it on in the second half, notching the first six tallies with freshman Julianna Ricci potting two goals and Kalbian recording three straight goals. The Pioneers attempted to answer back, getting within seven goals after senior Patricia Kane and junior Courtney Wheeler scored, but the Ducks silenced the comeback with goals from sophomore Mariel Haubrich, junior Mackenzie Swartout and Wilcox.

The Ducks held a 31-17 advantage in shots and forced three more turnovers than their opponents. Hughes finished with three goals, while Wilcox had three goals and four helpers to go along with two draw controls. Ricci and Kalbian each forced two turnovers while freshman Stephanie Schnelzer and junior Catie Shelton combined to make eight saves.

Wheeler led the Pioneers with three goals while DuPont had two goals in the loss. Juniors Kells Casey and Erin Jacobson registered a combined 17 saves for the visitors.

Stevens looks to extend their winning streak to six as they take on Elmira in Empire 8 action tomorrow at noon at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.
