HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 1, 2015) – Junior
Erika Wilcox netted career goal No.100 in the Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse 13-9 victory over Rowan University on Wednesday.
The defense in the second half was stellar once again, limiting Rowan to three goals on eight shots in the second 30 minutes of play. On Sunday against Elmira, the defense held the Soaring Eagles to two shots on goal in the second half.
Wilcox hit the century mark just 1:38 into the contest off a beautiful pass from senior
Caitlyn Hughes. Freshmen
Julianna Ricci and
Cami Santor along with Wilcox tallied goals in the first 14 minutes of play, giving the Ducks a 4-0 lead. Rowan (3-4) controlled the final 15 minutes of play in the opening period, notching the final six goals as senior Becca Wood contributed two to give the Profs a 6-4 halftime advantage.
After a scoreless opening four minutes of play in period two, the goals came often for the Ducks (7-1). Sophomore
Laura Roberts and Santor each scored within a 21 second span, but Rowan retook the lead off Wood's third goal of the game. Stevens then went on to pot the next seven goals, with Ricci and sophomore
Caroline DeLuca each scoring one. Hughes would score two and Wilcox netted three more to stretch the lead to 13-7. The visitors would score two late goals but the game was already much in doubt as the defense of the Ducks forced eight second half turnovers which would be key to victory.
Stevens held the advantage in almost every statistical category as they outshot the Profs 29-20 and were 12-14 on clearing attempts. The biggest advantage was in draw controls, as the Ducks won 15 out of 24 draws to help control the tempo of play.
Wilcox scored five goals and added an assist with three draw controls and eight shots on net while Ricci, Hughes and Santor all had two goal games. Senior
Amanda Ingersoll, sophomore
Madison Annitto and freshman
Victoria Alvarez all forced two turnovers, while junior
Catie Shelton made 10 saves and recorded two ground balls for the victory.
Wood had three goals and six shots and five ground balls for Rowan, who also received a pair of goals from junior Rachel Emerson. Freshman Erin Horner made seven saves in defeat.
The Ducks travel to take on Ithaca on Saturday at 1 p.m.
