Women’s Lacrosse Falls In Regular Season Finale

HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 25, 2015) – Junior Erika Wilcox tallied five goals, but the Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team fell in overtime 13-12 to Nazareth College on Saturday.
 
Stevens dropped to 12-4 while Nazareth moved to 12-3 with the victory.
 
The hosts tallied the first three goals of the contest spread across the opening 10:36 with goals from Wilcox, sophomore Mariel Haubrich and senior Caitlyn Hughes. The Golden Flyers got one back on a shorthanded marker by Carly, but Wilcox notched her second of the morning with just under 11 minutes left in the first period. Nazareth closed the half on a 4-1 roll, with Gates scoring two goals and Suzie Gray and Leah Marvin chipping in goals for the visitors.
 
Naz continued to roll, potting the first four goals on half number two, before Wilcox scored two in 1:20 span to cut the deficit down to two. After freshman Julianna Ricci cut the lead in half, Kate Rothrock and Haley DeVona netted goals to reestablish the three goal edge with 16:02 left in the contest. Stevens mounted a comeback, with junior Kathleen Kalbian scoring a pair of goals while Wilcox also netted one to send the game into overtime.
 
Nazareth opened the first overtime with a Devona goal with 1:32 on the clock, and Brooke Sullivan scored with nine seconds left to give the visitors a two goal lead again. Ricci tallied her second goal of the game 15 seconds into the second overtime, but goalie Ashley Kirch stopped a Kalbian attempt with 35 ticks left to give the visitors the victory and the number one seed in the Empire 8 tournament next weekend.
 
Kalbian finished with five points on seven shots while leading team with seven ground balls and five draw controls. Hughes had a pair of goals with six shots. Victoria Alvarez anchored the defense with four ground balls and three caused turnovers.
 
DeVona had four goals and seven shots, while Gates had a hat trick and a team high five draw controls.
 
Stevens will take on St. John Fisher in the opening round of the E8 tournament, with a time to be determined.
