HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 22, 2016) – The No. 9 Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team topped Ithaca 5-0 in the regular season finale Saturday.
The Ducks moved to 16-1-0 and a perfect 8-0-0 in the Empire 8 Conference. IC dropped to 10-4-2, 5-2-1 in the E8. Stevens will host the E8 Tournament next weekend, with times and opponents to be announced later.
The Bombers had a chance just 1:12 in. as a shot by Holly Niemiec was knocked down and covered by junior goalkeeper
Lindsey Mahnken. Stevens got on the board in the eighth minute, freshman
Julia Panko rifled a shot from just outside the box into the top corner for the eighth tally of the season. IC took the next two attempts, but both shots were denied by Mahnken.
Stevens put six other shots towards IC keeper Stacey DiGiorgio, but each was saved. With the clock running down in the half, senior
Raba Nassif ripped an attempt that sailed wide to end the period 1-0 in favor of the hosts. Eight minutes into the second half, the Bombers were whistled for hand ball inside the box. Senior
Gabby Mathelier stepped up to the penalty spot and converted the PK to double the Ducks lead.
Five minutes later, Panko tallied her second of the afternoon. The rookie took a shot from inside the box that tipped off the fingers of DiGiorgio and rolled across the line giving the hosts a three goal advantage. Nassif added a goal with 14:27 remaining, marking the third straight game Nassif netted a goal. Sophomore
Misha Brewster capped off the scoring in the 78t minute, touching in a cross from sophomore
Zisi Komar.
Mathelier, Panko and Nassif each recorded four shots in the victory. Mahnken and sophomore
Madi Chollett combined to make seven saves in the victory.
DiGiorgio made seven saves while Karen Macke stopped three in relief.
