Women’s Lacrosse’s Comeback Bid Ends In Overtime Loss

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (April 16, 2016) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team overcame a three-goal deficit in the final five minutes of the game against Nazareth College Saturday, but fell on a Naz goal less than two minutes into the overtime period, 10-9.

The loss dropped Stevens to 7-6 (3-2), while Naz moved to 8-5 (3-2).

Trailing 9-6 with 10:34 left of the clock, Stevens, sophomore Julianna Ricci and junior Kathleen Kalbian each scored with under five minutes to go to get the Ducks to within one. Ricci tied the game in the closing seconds with a score off a feed from senior Erika Wilcox, before Naz registered the game winner with 4:16 left in overtime.

Ricci, Wilcox, sophomore Cami Santor, and freshman Mackenzie Metzler each tallied two goals, while four different Ducks had assists. Kalbian and sophomore Victoria Alvarez won a combined five times off the draw, and sophomore Stephanie Schnelzer registered 10 saves in the cage for the fourth time this season.

As a team, the Ducks edged Naz on draw controls 11-10, and caused eight Golden Flyers turnovers.

Naz grabbed the early lead with a score less than two minutes into regulation, but Stevens responded with a free-position goal from Santor followed by Wilcox's 47th of the season.

It would be all the scoring Stevens would have in the first however as Naz ended the half on a 5-0 run, before starting the second with two more to put the Ducks in an 8-2 hole.

Metzler ended the drought with 22:17 on the clock off a pass from junior Mary Beth Irwin, followed by a 3-0 run comprised of goals from Wilcox, Santor, and another from Metzler. Naz responded with a goal of its own to re-build the lead to 9-6, before Stevens rallied with three unanswered to send the game to overtime.

Naz won the initial draw control in the extra period, before holding possession for the eventual game-winning shot.

The Ducks will be back in action tomorrow when they travel to No. 17 St. John Fisher College.
