Women’s Lacrosse Earns No. 2 Seed With Dominating Win

ELMIRA, N.Y. (April 30, 2016) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team (10-6, 6-2) shutout Elmira College (6-9, 2-6) in the second half Saturday in a dominating 20-4 Empire 8 Conference road win.

The win combined with a loss from St. John Fisher College gives Stevens the No. 2 seed heading into next weekend's E8 Championship. The two-day three-game tournament will take place at top-seeded Ithaca College.

Senior Erika Wilcox scored six times to lead the Ducks offensively, while junior Kathleen Kalbian scored five goals with an assist. Junior Laura Roberts tallied five points off three goals and two assists, and freshman Mackenzie Metzler score three goals with an assist.

Junior Stephanie Schnelzer tallied six saves, while junior Madison Annitto caused three turnovers to lead Stevens defensively.

As a team, the Ducks outshot Elmira 35-14, and dominated on the draw 17-9. The 20-goal scoring effort was the first for Stevens since defeating Neumann University 21-6 in last spring's ECAC Tournament.

Wilcox put the Ducks ahead with two goals in the game's first three minutes, before Kalbian's free-position goal four minutes later made it 3-0. Wilcox continued her hot start with another goal soon after, followed by Roberts' off a feed from junior Mariel Haubrich to make it 5-0.

Elmira ended the drought by scoring three of the next four to make it 6-4 with 9:19 left in the half, but a score from Kalbian sparked a 5-0 Stevens run to take the Ducks into the half up 11-4.

The Ducks saw goals from five different players during the run, two of which came off a free-position attempt.

Metzler scored 13 seconds into the second to extend the lead to eight, followed just over a minute later by a goal from Wilcox off a pass from Metzler. Roberts' free-position goal one minute later ballooned the lead to 10, before sophomore Julianna Ricci made it a 15-4 with another free-position goal for Stevens.

Two more goals from Stevens put the game out of reach at 17-4, before the Ducks capped their scoring with goals from Wilcox, Kalbian and Metzler in the final 6:51 to clinch the 20-4 victory.

Saturday's semifinal game will start at 1:30 p.m.
