No. 14 Women’s Soccer Downs Ramapo

HOBOKEN, N.J. (August 29, 2016) – Seniors Gabby Mathelier and Raba Nassif along with sophomore Zisi Komar scored a pair of goals to lead the No. 14 Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team to a 9-1 win over Ramapo College Thursday.

The Ducks (1-0) pressured Ramapo early, and nearly got the first marker five minutes in. Off a corner kick by Nassif, the ball caromed around in the box but a shot that deflected off classmate Carly Bean was snared by Ramapo (0-1) goalie Elizabeth Harvell. Six minutes later, Komar scored the teams' first goal of the year, weaving into the box and blasting a shot past the keeper.

Just three minutes after the Komar tally, it was Mathelier who added a goal. Mathelier juked a defender and ripped a shot that deflected off the goalie. Komar would add her second of the evening in the 21st minute, before Bean converted a penalty kick to give the hosts a 4-0 halftime edge.

Nearly seven minutes into the second stanza, freshman Julia Panko netted her first career goal, grabbing a loose ball in the box and scoring. Panko collected her first career assist on Mathlier's second of the contest in the 58th minute. Panko rifled a shot that was stopped by Harvell, but Mathelier pounced on the loose ball to beat the keeper. The senior from Pomona, N.Y. has tallied four goals in two career games against Ramapo.

The visitors answered with a goal 1:01 after Mathelier's second, but senior Rachel Chavkin scored just into the 81st minute to bring back the six goal lead. Nassif capped off the scoring with a pair of goals in the final 10 minutes, including a header off a cross from freshman Gabriella Saade. Saade recorded two helpers in her collegiate debut.

Nassif led the way with seven shots, including five on target, while Bean, Mathelier, sophomore Olivia Butera and junior Gabby Pagkalinawan each had three. Junior Lindsey Mahnken and sophomore Madi Chollett each played 45 minutes in net, combining to make three stops.

Harvell made seven saves for Ramapo, and Michaela Knoblock scored the lone goal for the Roadrunners.

The Ducks face an early season test Saturday at 7 p.m. as No. 3 Messiah College visits the De Baun Athletic Complex

QUOTE BOOK
"It was a good opening night for us," said Head Coach Jeff Parker. "We had to try to solve their defensive set-up and fortunately were able to do so early enough that it gave us control of the match.  Several individuals had some key performances and combine that with the great support from the stands equals a good evening for our team. Now it's our task to start to prepare for our next match and find several ways to improve upon tonight's performance."

"We did a good staying focused with high energy," Mathelier said. "Just got to take it one game at a time."
