HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 17, 2016) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team topped Oneonta and Stockton on day two of the Ducks Classic, finishing the weekend 4-0.
The team moved to 13-1, with a 10 match winning streak, and will host Ithaca and Nazareth in a tri-match next Saturday.
STEVENS 3, ONEONTA 1 (25-19, 25-16, 24-26, 25-15)
The Ducks fell behind 8-5 in set one, before coming to back to tie things at 10. A Ducks blocking error restored the Red Dragons one point lead, but sophomore
Brianna Perez keyed a 6-1 spurt to push Stevens in front for good. Oneonta closed to 20-18, but five of the final six points went in favor of Stevens.
Set two saw Oneonta saw score two to open the set, but Stevens roared back with six straight and forced the guests into a timeout. The Red Dragons used back-to-back unforced errors to scoot within four, however Perez and junior
Sydni Horner teamed up for seven of the next eight. Senior
Mary Tobin ended the set with a thunderous kill.
After dropping the third set in a tight contest, the Ducks rebounded well in set four. With the score even at 1,2,3,4,5 and 6, Stevens would eventually find a brief rally to go up 14-12. Horner would then carve up the Red Dragon defense, serving eight straight to close to within three of match point. A ball-handling error by Oneonta ended the match however, erasing any comeback hopes.
Freshman
Shelby Stewart had a career high seven total blocks (one solo, six assists) while seniors
Christina Sciarra and Tobin each had double-doubles. Sciarra went for 12 kills and 10 digs, with Tobin chipping in 11 digs and 11 kills.
STEVENS 3, STOCKTON 0 (25-19, 25-12, 26-24)
The high-octane Osprey offense hit a couple of snags when going against the Ducks defense. Stevens forced Stockton into a .124 hitting percentage, including 21 errors. The Ducks also held a 9-3 edge in blocks.
Despite falling behind the Ospreys early, a 3-0 advantage led by a pair of kills from freshman
Casey King put Stevens ahead for good. Stockton did not get within three points after, and the hosts closed out set one with two kills from Tobin and an ace from Sciarra.
A Ducks blocking error trimmed their set two lead to only 10-7, but Perez and King each had multiple point runs to boost the lead to seven, capped off with an ace from King. Tobin added an ace after a wonderful kill by freshman
Sara Hain during the set final 7-1 run, as the Ducks were in control at 2-0.
Stockton took advantage of two unforced attack errors to construct a 6-5 score to begin set three, but Stevens scored 13 of the next 14 which they thought would put the match away. Highlights of the run included back-to-back-to-back blocks anchored by Hain, as well back-to-back stuffs by the duo of Stewart and King. The Ducks were seemingly in control up 20-8, but the Ospreys awoke, tallying 12 of the next 13. Hain slammed a kill home to bring up match point, but Stockton fended off two straight. Finally, a pair of Osprey unforced errors did them in, and the match went in favor of Stevens.
The freshman trio of King, Hain and Stewart combined for 23 kills and 15 total blocks. King established a new career-high with six block assists, while Tobin pounded home 11 kills. Perez dished out 36 assists in the victory.
The Ducks welcome their Alumnae next Saturday, hosting Alumnae Day against Nazareth at 12 p.m.
