CLAREMONT, Calif. (September 2, 2016) – Head Coach
Glenn DeHaven of the Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team picked up his 100th career win as the Ducks won their first two matches of 2016.
STEVENS 3, WHITTIER 0 (25-21, 25-11, 25-19)
The Ducks jumped out to an early 8-1 early thanks to a pair of service aces from freshman
Casey King, but the Poets closed to within two at 16-14. A kill by senior
Christina Sciarra and an ace by sophomore
Emily Piekarski stretched back to four, but Whittier came back with three straight markers of their own. The Poets kept the set within two points, but a pair of attack errors handed Stevens the opening set.
Whittier kept pace with the Ducks high-powered offense to open the second frame, but King ignited a run with a kill followed by two points from the service line to build the lead to 11-7. Sciarra served up three straight markers aided by a pair of Poet attack errors, and the Ducks closed the stanza out with nine of the final 10 taillies.
Once again the third set was close in the beginning, as the two sides were deadlocked at eight and nine before Alaina Rhee gave Whittier their final lead of the afternoon at 10-9. Sciarra slammed home a kill to even things up, before junior
Sydni Horner carved the Poets up for six straight including back-to-back aces. After forcing a side-out, sophomore
Brianna Perez dialed in back-to-back aces herself. The Poets climbed back to within two, but senior
Mary Tobin notched a pair of kills to end the match.
Sciarra posted a double-double with a team-best 10 kills and 15 digs, while Horner tallied 14 digs. King, Piekarski and Perez each served up three aces each, with freshman
Shelby Stewart recording four block assists in her collegiate debut. Stewart and classmate
Sara Hain combined for 10 kills and just three errors.
STEVENS 3. MINNESOTA-MORRIS 1 (18-25. 25-23, 25-18, 25-19)
After dropping the first set, the Ducks roared back, taking the final three. Stewart and Hain once again were forces in the middle, combining for 12 kills, nine total blocks and one attack error in 36 attempts. Perez dished out 33 helpers to go along with nine digs in the four set win.
Horner paced four Ducks with double-digit digs, leading the way with 34. King and Sciarra posted double-doubles in the nightcap, each recording 12 kills.
Stevens will be taking on Rhodes College and No. 1 California Lutheran University beginning at 12 p.m. Eastern time tomorrow.
