HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 18, 2017) – Second-ranked and undefeated The College of New Jersey squeaked a 1-0 victory over the No. 16 Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer squad in Hoboken on Wednesday night. In front of a raucous crowd, the two ranked sides put on an impressive display during the well-played, even, scoreless first half.
Stevens outshot the Lions 8-7 in the first 45, though TCNJ put three shots on goal to the Ducks' two.
Four minutes into the second half, TCNJ netted the game's only goal when Stevens goalie
Lindsey Mahnken made a great fingertip save on Jessica Goldman's shot, but Elizabeth Thoresen was able to put in the rebound for the 1-0 lead.
The Lions had the better run of play in the second period and outshot Stevens 15-1 in the final half. But Mahnken made 10 saves to keep the Ducks in the game for the full 90.
Other notable moments included having a TCNJ goal called back for offside on a corner kick, and one final, remarkable save by Mahnken with nine minutes left when she punched a hard shot just over the crossbar.
Nicole DiPasquale earned the shutout for the Lions. The TCNJ defense ensured she needed to make just two saves all night. They have allowed only two goals in 14 games this season.
"Hats off to the visitors tonight as they made things difficult for us - especially in the second half," said head coach
Jeff Parker. "We weren't able to get a hold of the match and deal with their pressure well enough to create enough chances to come away with points on the night. We're disappointed - but that's what happens sometimes when you play the types of teams we schedule. For us to continue moving forward as a program we are going to have nights like this. It's part of the process. Just like us regrouping and getting ready to face Utica at their Homecoming on Saturday. We'll have to refocus in order play better so we can continue to try to reach our potential. That's what we're about from day one until the last day of the season."
The Ducks will head to Utica College this weekend for an Empire 8 matchup with the Pioneers at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
