Penalty Stroke Only Difference Between Field Hockey, 1st-Place W&J

HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 28, 2017) – The Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey program had a great showing against Empire 8-leading Washington and Jefferson College on Saturday; a penalty stroke in the 39th minute was the only goal of the game as the Presidents escaped with a 1-0 win. It was Senior Day for the field hockey program's six members of the class of 2018.

Nicole Mottole made nine saves in an impressive performance. Drew Lustig also had a defensive save.

  • The Ducks had an excellent defensive showing in the first half as they shut out the high-scoring Presidents.
  • Nicolle Mottole made four first-half saves, including a pair of outstanding stops on point-blank shots
  • Drew Lustig came up with a defensive save on the only ball that eluded Mottole on a screamer off a penalty corner to keep the game scoreless through halftime
  • W&J dominated the first half stats, however. They did not allow a shot and took all five of the penalty corners in the opening period
  • Mottole got a piece of the stroke but it found its way in as Rachel Buyan earned the only goal of the game
  • A few minutes later, Katti Thomasian set up Skylar Migliaccio with perhaps Stevens' best chance, but President goalkeeper Karlie Baran broke it up by stacking the pads on a sliding save
  • The Ducks kept up with W&J in the second half, as both sides peppered the cage with seven shots
  • Mottole continued to play well and made another five saves in the second half to keep Stevens in the game until the final whistle.
  • The Ducks earned a 5-4 edge in penalty corners in the second half.
  • W&J finished with a 7-0 regular season record in the Empire 8 and will host the Empire 8 Tournament next weekend as the league's top seed

"(It was a) hard-fought match today and I was happy to see us pick up the intensity in the second half," said head coach Meredith Spencer-Blaetz. "It's tough to have the game come down to a penalty stroke but that's the way it goes sometimes. I'm proud of our seniors for the battle and now we're ready to set our sights on 2018."

The Ducks wrap up their 2017 campaign with a 6-11 record and 2-5 in the conference. Seven of their losses came by one goal
