Softball rallies late to down Greenville for a second split in Tucson

TUCSON, Ariz. (March 13, 2017)  – Freshman Samantha Schattin delivered a two-out, bases-loaded single as part of a five-hit afternoon and senior Amanda DiLeo homered and drove in three runs as the Stevens Institute of Technology softball team rallied for a 12-4 victory over Greenville College and fell to Augsburg College, 6-1, to earn a second consecutive split at the Tucson Invitational Games.

Stevens 12 Greenville 4 (6 inn.)
In the day's opener, Stevens scored 11 unanswered runs to rally from a 4-1 deficit to edge Greenville, 12-4.

Emily Sellitti went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in for the Ducks and DiLeo hit a sixth-inning blast that gave Stevens an eight-run cushion to end the game because of run differential.

Trailing 4-1 entering their half of the fifth, Stevens rallied for seven runs off three Greenville pitchers to earn the victory.

Sellitti led off the inning with a double. Gina Schnecker pinch-ran for the third baseman and promptly stole third. After Farryl Groder lined out, Corinne Loncar one-hopped a ball over the left field fence to score Schnecker and prompt a Greenville pitching change.

Lauren Shirley greeted Catie Opp (0-1) by hitting a ball to Tiffany Samsone. The third baseman was unable to field the ball, allowing Shirley to reach on the miscue. The Stevens infielder quickly nabbed second and after Gemma struck out, DiLeo walked to load the bases. Katherine Tirabassi reached on an infield single to force in a run. Rightfielder Marissa Barnes reached on the second error of the inning, scoring Shirley to tie the game.

Drawing her fourth straight start, Schattin delivered a base hit back up the middle to score DiLeo and Tirabassi to give the Ducks their first lead of the day. Sellitti continued the inning with her second double of the inning, driving in Barnes and Schattin, for an 8-4 lead.
After Christine LaRochelle (2-1) retired the Panthers in order the next half-inning, the Stevens offense continued to click against the Greenville bullpen.

Loncar led off the final frame with a double and advanced to third on a Shirley single. After a Greenville pitching change, Gemma reached on third Greenville error of the day, setting the stage for DiLeo's game ending blast.

LaRochelle pitched two solid innings of relief to earn her second victory of the season. The left-hander allowed one run on three hits and struck out four. Starter Olivia Gemma pitched four innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits with one strikeout.

Becca Oldham went 3-for-4 and scored three times for the Panthers.

Augsburg 6 Stevens 1
Less than 24 hours after Stevens defeated Augsburg, the Auggies and the Ducks met for a second time an  Augsburg walked away with a 6-1 victory.

Schattin, Gemma, and Gina DeOliveira each collected two hits, but the Ducks were only able to push one run across against Courtney Larson (2-1).

Stevens had its best opportunity for runs in the third. Cara Napolitano doubled to led off the inning, but was erased on a double play. With two outs, Schattin extended the inning with a single and then scored on DeOliveira's double. Gemma kept the inning alive with a two-out single, but DeOliveira was tagged out at third to end the inning.

Augsburg was able to take advantage of 11 walks, including four in the final two innings as the Auggies plated three runs to break open a close game.

Leadoff hitter Carly Dropik walked to lead off the game and stole second. Brianna Cline followed with a walk. With Dropik running on the pitch, Anesia King dropped a sacrifice bunt to third, scoring the speedy second baseman for the game's first run. Dropik finished the day with three walks and two runs scored.

Augsburg increased its lead in the third. Cline led off with a single and moved to second on King's second sacrifice of the game. Katie Parker delivered an RBI single to score the second run of the game.

The Ducks would threaten again in the seventh, putting two runners on, but Larson retired DeOliveira on a flyout to right to earn the complete-game victory.

Marissa Cappello (0-1) allowed six runs on eight hits in 6 2-3 innings of work.
