HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 22, 2017) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team scored two goals in the final two minutes to get within one, but couldn't connect on the equalizer in a 6-5 loss to No. 7 Trinity Wednesday night in Hoboken.
The loss dropped Stevens to 5-2, while Trinity moved to 6-1.
Senior
Kathleen Kalbian, sophomore
Mackenzie Metzler, junior
Julianna Ricci, freshman
Kyra Bednarski, and senior
Laura Roberts each scored goals for the Ducks, while senior
Mariel Haubrich added a pair of assists. Junior goalie
Stephanie Schnelzer made seven saves in 60 minutes of action.
Stevens' defense forced Trinity into 14 turnovers, including three on clear attempts.
Roberts got the Ducks on the board initially 13 minutes into regulation, but Trinity responded with two unanswered over the next seven minutes to go up 2-1. Kalbian provided the equalizer off a feed from Haubrich with under seven to play, before the Bantams scored twice in the final minute to take a 4-2 advantage into the break.
A free-position score from Metzler in the extra-woman opportunity brought the Ducks back to within one six minutes into the second, but Trinity answered with a goal of its own approximately one minute later followed by one just past the 20-minute mark to bring the lead back to three.
The score held at 6-3 over the next 18 minutes, before Stevens rallied with goals from Bednarski and Ricci in the final two minutes with Ricci's coming with 36 seconds to go. It's as close as the Ducks would get though as Trinity won the ensuing draw and held on to possession in the final seconds.
Stevens will be back in action Saturday when it hosts No. 14 St. John Fisher at 11 a.m. in Hoboken.
