WEEHAWKEN, N.J. (March 30, 2017) – Junior
Corinne Loncar's bases-loaded walk gave the Stevens Institute of Technology softball team a 5-4 victory and a doubleheader sweep of New York University Wednesday afternoon at Waterfront Park.
Senior
Emily Sellitti totaled six hits and drove in four runs and junior
Farryl Groder scored twice for the Ducks, who improved to 12-6.
Ashley Mains collected four hits and drove in three runs for NYU, who dropped its third straight game in falling to 8-6.
Stevens 12 NYU 4
In the day's opener, the Ducks scored five times in the second and three times in the third en route to a 12-4 victory.
Emily Sellitti went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and a pair of RBI and classmate
Gina Schnecker scored three times in support of starter
Olivia Gemma (4-0).
After Jacqueline Finn homered off Gemma in the first, Stevens sent 12 batters to the plate in the decisive five-run second.
Amanda DiLeo led off with single off Diana King (1-2) and moved to second on
Marissa Barnes' single to left center.
Katherine Tirabassi walked to load the bases. Schnecker grounded into a fielder's choice for the first out of the inning and Sellitti reached on an error by Molly Webber to tie the game at one.
Farryl Groder followed with a two-run single up the middle to give the Ducks the lead.
Corinne Loncar was hit by a pitch to again load the bases.
Lauren Shirley followed with the first of her three hits, singling up the middle to score Sellitti for a 4-1 lead.
Sydni Holtz relieved King but uncorked a wild pitch with
Olivia Gemma at the plate to score the fifth Stevens run of the inning.
Tirabassi started a Stevens rally in the third with a leadoff single and scored on another Webber miscue. Shirley added an RBI single to give the Ducks an 8-1 lead. The slugging second baseman leads the Empire 8 Conference in runs batted in.
The offensive outburst was in support of Gemma, who allowed one run on four hits in four innings of work in winning her fourth straight decision.
Stevens 5 NYU 4
In game two,
Corinne Loncar worked a one-out, bases-loaded walk off Scarlett Murphy to give the Ducks a 5-4 victory to complete the sweep.
Freshman
Samantha Schattin began the rally with a one-out bunt single.
Emily Sellitti connected for a ground rule double to left center. Murphy (1-2) intentionally walked
Farryl Groder to load the bases and then unintentionally walked Loncar to force in Schattin with the winning run.
Stevens jumped out to a 2-0 lead on RBI singles by Loncar and
Cara Napolitano and then doubled its lead on
Emily Sellitti's first home run of the season. The third baseman hit five homers in 2016.
NYU rallied for four runs in the ninth off
Marissa Cappello (3-3). Back-to-back walks opened the frame. Ashley Mains spoiled the Stevens shutout bid with a double to center. Caroline Saccacio singled up the middle to bring the potential winning run to the plate. After an error tied the game, Cappello struck out back-to-back errors to strand the go-ahead run at third.
Christine LaRochelle threw four scoreless innings in a no-decision.
Up Next: The Ducks open Empire 8 Conference play with a pair of doubleheaders at Nazareth (April 1) and No. 5 St. John Fisher.
