Kalbian & Bednarski net four goals each; Women’s Lacrosse clips Hawks

ONEONTA, N.Y. (April 22, 2017)  – Senior Kathleen Kalbian and freshman Kyra Bednarski each recorded four goals as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team defeated Hartwick College, 18-3, in an Empire 8 Conference matchup Saturday. 

Eight Ducks registered a goal as Stevens jumped out to a 10-3 first-half lead in winning their fourth straight game to improved to 12-3 overall and 7-0 in Empire 8 play. Kalbian added three assists to finish the afternoon with seven points. Bednarski had two assists to finish with six points and has 24 points over her last four games. Senior Mariel Haubrich had a goal and three assists and is third in the conference with 2.47 assists per game. Mackenzie Metzler, Julianna Ricci, Laura Roberts and Emily Shanklin each had two goals and Hannah Condren had one to round out the Stevens scoring.

Stevens remains in a tie with Ithaca College atop the Empire 8 Conference standings. The teams will play on April 29 in upstate New York.

Megan Young had the game's opening goal for Hartwick, who fell to 8-5 overall and 3-4 in conference play.

Defensively, Kalbian earned seven draw controls and picked up four ground balls to lead the team. The Ducks held a 16-7 edge on draws and picked up ten more ground balls than the Hawks. Victoria Alvarez and Bednarski each caused two turnovers helping Stevens gain a 7-5 edge. Bednarksi was a 2-for-2 on free position shots and the Ducks were 7-of-17 as a team. Hartiwck went 0-for-2.

Stevens outshot Hartwick 36-9 and went 9-of-10 on clear attempts, while holding the Hawks to 7-of-13. Junior Stephanie Schnelzer made four saves in earning the win.

After Young's goal opened the game's scoring, Ricci scored back-to-back goals over a 1:08 stretch to give Stevens the lead. Kalbian followed with back-to-back goals of her own as the Ducks took a commanding 4-1 lead. 

Hartwick answered when Jennifer Darasz beat Schnelzer to trim the Stevens lead to 4-2, but the Ducks responded with six straight goals to push the advantage to 10-2. Shanklin started the run with her 17th of the year and the tally was followed by scores from Condren, Shanklin, Kalbian, Haubrich, and Metzler. Hailey Pooler scored with 17 seconds in the first half to close out the Hartwick scoring.

Coming out of halftime, the Ducks immediately built upon their lead. Roberts converted a Haubrich pass to increase the lead to 11-3. Kalbian, Roberts, and Metzler scored over a seven-minute stretch to give Stevens a 14-3 edge. Bednarski scored the game's final four goals of the game to provide the final margin. The Syracuse, New York native increased her season total to 45. Averaging three goals per game, Bednarski is 12 away from tenth place on the single-season all-time list. 

Up next: Stevens takes on Ithaca College Saturday with first place, and home-field advantage throughout the Empire 8 playoffs on the line.
