HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 8, 2017) – Five consecutive goals turned a 4-2 first-half deficit into a 7-4 advantage as the Stevens Institute of Technology defeated Nazareth College, 11-8, Saturday in an Empire 8 Conference matchup.
Six different Ducks registered a goal as the Ducks improved to 9-3 overall and 4-0 in Empire 8 play. Nazareth had won the last four meetings between the programs, including the last three by one goal. Freshman
Kyra Bednarski led all players with four goals. Junior
Cami Santor and freshman
Hannah Condren each recorded two goals for the Ducks and sophomore
Mackenzie Metzler had one assist. Seniors
Kathleen Kalbian and
Laura Roberts, along with freshman
Emily Shanklin, added one goal each to round out the scoring.
Junior
Stephanie Schnelzer recorded nine saves to earn the victory.
Jamie Martin had three goals and an assist to lead the Golden Flyers, who fell to 5-5 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Defensively, Kalbian filled the stat sheet, earning four draw controls, causing two turnovers and picking up three ground balls. The Ducks held a 13-8 edge in draw controls as Metzler and junior
Victoria Alvarez earned three each to contribute to the Stevens advantage. Sophomore defender
Regan Littell led all players with three caused turnovers and 10 Ducks picked up a ground ball helping Stevens to a 21-17 edge. The Ducks were 0-for-4 on free position shots and Nazareth went 1-for-3.
Stevens held a 27-21 advantage on shots went 10-of-13 on clear attempts.
Bednarsi and Roberts scored twenty-two seconds apart to give Stevens an early 2-0 lead. Nazareth scored four straight goals over a five-minute stretch to put the visitors in front 4-2.
Shanklin's unassisted goal began the decisive run for Stevens and was followed by two goals from Condren and one from Santor as Stevens regained the lead. Bednarksi's up goal pushed the advantage to 7-4. Martin scored her second goal of the half to trim the Stevens lead to 7-5 at the intermission.
Gabbie Charles opened second-half scoring to bring Nazareth within one goal, but Santor and Bednarski scored 41 seconds apart to push the lead back 9-6. Kalbian and Bednarksi added goals to close the Stevens scoring. Haley DeVona and Martin added second-half goals to produce the game's final margin. After Martin's goal with 9:19 left in the game, Stevens held Nazareth without a shot over the remainder of the game.
