ITHACA, N.Y. (May 7, 2017) – Fourth-seeded St. John Fisher College earned its sixth-straight Empire 8 Tournament Championship with a 10-3 victory over two-seed Stevens Institute of Technology on Sunday in Ithaca.
Stevens freshman
Kyra Bednarski earned the 50th (and 51st) goal of her rookie campaign to highlight the afternoon for the Ducks.
Julianna Ricci also scored for Stevens.
The Cardinals raced out to a 3-0 lead early on. Bednarski put Stevens on the board midway through the first half, and scored again two minutes later. But with five ticks on the clock before halftime, Claire Bollin stuffed in an unassisted goal to give Fisher a 5-2 lead at the break.
Fisher put a stranglehold on the Duck offense in the second half and allowed just one goal in the final 30 minutes while scoring five more themselves. Morgan Hayes made two saves for the Cardinals and held the Ducks to a 1-4 performance on free position shots. Stevens was held to just seven shots on the afternoon by the Fisher defense.
Bollin scored four times for the Cardinals and Jordan Johnson also had a muti-goal game.
Kathleen Kalbian led Stevens with three draw controls, three ground balls and shared the caused turnover lead (2) with
Madison Annitto.
Stevens was making its first Empire 8 Championship game appearance since winning back-to-back crowns in 2010 and 2011. Fisher has won the last five Empire 8 titles.
Bednarski, Ricci and
Victoria Alvarez were named to the Empire 8 Conference All-Tournament Team for their efforts.
