Softball Wins First-Ever E8 Tournament Game Before Bowing Out to No. 21 Ithaca

ITHACA, N.Y. (May 7, 2017) – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team won its first-ever Empire 8 Tournament game with a 5-2 victory over Nazareth College in the second round on Sunday before dropping a 14-2 decision to No. 21 Ithaca in an elimination game later in the afternoon.

Carrying a 1-0 advantage from a suspended game that began on Saturday, the Ducks let the lead get away when Naz tied the game in the fourth inning and took a one-run lead in the fifth, leaving Stevens down to its final six outs.

Emily Sellitti led off the next frame with a single, but was still on base with two outs when Cara Napolitano worked a walk. Amanda DiLeo came through with a big two-out, 2-RBI double to right field that flipped the score to 3-2, Ducks in front.

Stevens added two insurance runs in the seventh when Samantha Schattin and Farryl Groder singled and came around on Corinne Loncar's 2-RBI triple to make the count 5-2.

Christine LaRochelle earned Stevens' first Empire 8 Tournament win in the circle in 10 tries with a complete-game effort. She allowed just one earned run, struck out four and did not allow an extra-basehit.

Previously on Saturday, Stevens earned its run in the top of the first on a two-out RBI double down the leftfield line by Olivia Gemma. Loncar scored the run after working a two-out walk. Rain halted play with one out in the bottom of the inning and a 1-1 count on Nazareth's Sarah Papponetti. LaRochelle retired Kristen Simmons on a comebacker for the first out of the framw.

In Sunday's second game against Ithaca, the Ducks ran out of gas. The Bombers scored the game's first six runs and hit a pair of home runs.

Groder drove in Stevens' two runs in the fifth inning with a double down the leftfield line. But Ithaca got the two runs back in the next half-inning and tacked on five in the seventh to advance to the Empire 8 final.

Groder and Loncar were named to the Empire 8 All-Tournament Team for their performances this week.

Stevens ends its season with a 24-17 record.
