Women’s Volleyball Suffers Two Setbacks

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (September 30, 2017) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball program was topped by Wesleyan University and Amherst College in the Nutmeg State on Saturday. The Ducks mounted a spirited comeback in the match against the Cardinals, fighting off four match points and winning the second set 32-30.

Wesleyan 3, Stevens 1
  • The Cardinals are now 12-1 on the year.
  • Casey King led the Ducks with 15 kills in the match
  • Shelby Stewart led the team with five blocks and three aces
  • Julie Greco and Brianna Perez split the setting duties and handed out 20 assists each
  • Sydni Horner had 33 digs to lead all players in the match
  • The Ducks also won an incredible 32-30 second set. Stewart and Emily Singleton combined for a block for the 31-30 lead, and Stewart ended the set with a kill to knot the match at 1-1
  • The Cardinals came back to win handily in the third, 25-10 and then held on for the win in the precarious end of the fourth
  • Nicole Hilton had 16 blocks to pace the hosts

Amherst 3, Stevens 0
  • The Lord Jeffs came out swinging, with a .309 hitting percentage in the match. Emily Kolsk and Claire Dennis both reach double-digit kills in three sets, and Charlotte Duran handed out 30 assists
  • King led the Ducks again with 12 kills
  • Taleen Mitchell fired three aces for Stevens
  • Horner (13) and Mitchell (10) both posted double-digit digs in the match for the Ducks

"Both teams today brought a lot of firepower from the start," said Stevens head coach Annie McShea. "Amherst played with nothing to lose and Wesleyan is a very disciplined and well-trained team. We had trouble taking advantage of our opportunities at times but I'm proud of the way we fought. To fight through a set when the score is in the thirties is a great feat. We're going to learn from this weekend and move forward. "

"Casey King was great today. She found ways to score against the other teams' weaknesses and came up with some big blocks. Shelby also had great serving in key times to keep us alive and fighting."

Stevens will return to action with an Empire 8 tri-match against Nazareth College and the Sage Colleges next weekend at home beginning at 11 a.m. The 4 p.m. match with the Gators will serve as Senior Day for the program.
