Women’s Soccer Blanks Elmira to Capture Empire 8 Regular-Season Title

ELMIRA, N.Y. (October 20, 2018)  – Five different Ducks found the back of the net as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team secured the Empire 8 conference regular-season title with a 5-0 victory over Elmira College Saturday afternoon in an league fixture at Campus Field. The regular-season title ensures that the E8's road to the NCAA Tournament will go through Hoboken for the third time in the last four seasons.

Junior Julia Panko opened the scoring for the Ducks, converting her third penalty kick of the season in the 13th minute. Six minutes later, classmate Gabby Saade pushed the advantage to two, chipping a Panko through ball over the head of Elmira goalkeeper Gabe Carmona. Freshman Ally Wanzor fired a shot to the upper right corner of the goal to give Stevens a 3-0 lead at the intermission.

Freshmen Ginger Harris and Gianna Nitti each scored their first collegiate goal in the second half for the Ducks, who improved to 11-2 overall and a perfect 7-0 in conference action. The Ducks will be looking for their fourth straight trip the the NCAA Tournament. The Ducks have reached the E8 tournament in every season since the team joined the conference in 2007.

Carmona protected the net in the first half making eight stops, while Meghan Ray took over for the second half and tallied nine. The Soaring Eagles fall to 3-11-2 on the season and 0-6-1 in conference play.

Sophomore Erika McCarthy and freshman Izzy DiDario totaled three saves in the combined clean sheet.

From the Sidelines

  • "We were really fighting hard to secure our position to host, and I think everyone gave their all today despite the field conditions, and we came out with the win, and now we are all super excited to be hosting" -Gianna Nitti
  • "This was a big victory for our team moving forward in our Empire 8 Farewell Tour. We all can't wait to see what the rest of the year holds." - Ginger Harris
  • "Good result at a place that has been historically very difficult for our game to be effective. [We] had to mix some things up and understand how to be successful on such a small and uneven pitch. [The] team keeps working to find the solutions to problems presented by our opposition. [We are] thankful to be able to capture this year's regular-season title and the right to host the E8 tournament." - head coach Jeff Parker
