No. 5 Williams Tops Women's Soccer in NCAA Second Round

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. (November 11, 2018)  – Freshman Ally Wanzor scored in the 50th minute but two late goals proved to be the difference as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team fell to No. 5 Williams College in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Sunday afternoon at Farley-Lamb Stadium.

After a corner kick by junior Julia Panko, freshman Brynn Budka fired off a shot that hit the crossbar. Senior Misha Brewster corralled the rebound before taking a shot that bounced of the Ephs' goalie towards Wanzor, who was finally able to boot the ball into the back of the net and give Stevens a 1-0 lead. The Ducks finished their season with a record of 16-3.

Coming out of a 20-minute injury break, Williams put on the pressure and Georgia Lord scored the tying goal within three minutes of the match returning to play. Less than 10 minutes later, Sydney Jones scored the game-winner for the Ephs, who improved to 17-1-2 on the year and advanced to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament.

Inside the Numbers
  • Freshman Izzy DiDario and Olivia Barnhill each made six saves for their respective teams.
  • The Ducks held the advantage in corner kicks, 4-3. Stevens took 146 corners this season, breaking the program record for most corner kicks in one season.
  • Stevens outshot the Ephs, 14-13. The Ducks outshot every opponent they faced this season.
  • Williams delivered more shots on net (8-7).
  • Both of Brewster's shots were on target.
  • Panko fired off a game-high four shots.

From The Sidelines
  • "Difficult pill to swallow today - felt like we were doing a lot of things we wanted to do, had a great deal of the ball and were creating chances. Ahead in the match 1-0 and honestly could have been more. Thought the injury break in the second half was the definitive moment of the match as Williams was able to reset and change the entire complexion of the match. They have a ton of experience and were able to get the crowd involved. They found another gear and we weren't able to counteract it. Amazing season and incredibly fortunate to have a chance to share it with our coaches, staff and our wonderful student-athletes. They mean the world to me and I am absolutely gutted that our season has come to a close. We'll have to treasure our seniors and learn from the weekend to ensure that our program continues to evolve." - head coach Jeff Parker.
