TUCSON, Ariz. (March 15, 2018) – 2-3 hitters
Farryl Groder and
Corinne Loncar had three hits each as the Stevens Institute of Technology softball team topped Augsburg University 7-2 on Wednesday.
Christine LaRochelle picked up the complete-game win.
The Ducks fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first, but the first five Stevens batters all reached base to chase the Auggie starter from the circle. Loncar,
Olivia Gemma and
Cara Napolitano earned RBI's in the frame to give Stevens the early 3-1 lead.
That was all the support LaRochelle would need. She scattered eight hits and struck out three to earn her first win of the season.
The Ducks added two in the home half of the second: Loncar and Gemma once again had RBI singles that made the count 5-1.
Sophomore
Melissa Alfonso lifted a solo homer in the fourth to extend Stevens' lead to 6-1.
Though the Ducks surrendered a run in the top of the fifth, Loncar was there again with an RBI single in the home half to bump the cushion back to five runs. LaRochelle twirled two scoreless innings from there as Stevens won 7-2.
Loncar finished with a totals of three runs batted in.
In the first game of the day, the Ducks were upended by the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse 6-1.
Lauren Shirley staked Stevens to an early 1-0 lead with an RBI double in the first inning, but the Eagles scored six unanswered runs to take it.
The Ducks will have one more day in the Arizona sun with matchups against Dickinson and Gustavus Adolphus beginning at 2 p.m. Eastern
