WEEHAWKEN, N.J. (March 31, 2018) – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team did not allow a single run as
Christine LaRochelle and
Marissa Cappello earned shutouts over Elmira College on Saturday. The scores were 5-0 and an 8-0 mercy-rule victory in game two.
LaRochelle tossed the Ducks' first shutout of 2018 in game one, scattering five hits in the full seven innings while striking out three.
Cappello took that tough act to follow and raised the bar even higher. She struck out the side 1-2-3 in the top of the first, and was perfect through three innings with eight strikeouts – only one Eagle was able to put the ball in play over that time.
Cappello took a perfect game into the fourth; the first hit she surrendered was a bunt single that finished in a bang-bang play at first. With Stevens scoring three runs in the home half of the first, Capello struck out two more in the fifth to nail down the run-rule-shortened game and earn her first shutout of 2018.
She finished with 11 strikeouts, tying her career high that came in a seven-inning game against St. Joseph's of Long Island on April 19 of last year.
Freshman Madison Gemma was the offensive star of the day. She was 4-for-5 over the two games, including her first career home run. It was a two-run shot the opposite way that gave Stevens the eight-run cushion necessary to end the day early. She also stroked two doubles and scored two runs to slug 1.800 for the day.
Farryl Groder and
Lauren Shirley were both 3-for-5 for Stevens. Groder drove in three of the Ducks' 13 runs and Shirley scored twice.

The Ducks will travel to No. 15 Ramapo College on Wednesday for an intra-state doubleheader against the Roadrunners.
