ALFRED, N.Y. (April 14, 2018) – On a day that pitted two unbeaten Empire 8 teams, the Stevens Institute of Technology softball team handed Alfred University two losses to move to a perfect 10-0 in the league and run its winning streak to 13 games.
Corinne Loncar finished with four hits for the Ducks and
Lauren Shirley drove in four runs.
In the circle,
Christine LaRochelle and
Marissa Cappello both continued their winning ways by striking out five each, while
Jessica Masur came into game one in a bases-loaded jam, got two outs without allowing a run and worked a scoreless seventh to earn the team's first save of the season.
In game one with LaRochelle on the mound, the Ducks scored two after
Gina DeOliveira and
Samantha Schattin walked to start the frame. Loncar delivered a 2-RBI double to the left-centerfield gap that scored both runners and made the count 2-0.
Stevens added another unearned run in the fifth;
Madison Gemma earned the RBI to make the score 3-0.
A leadoff walk came around to score for Alfred in the home half of the fifth, and in the sixth, the Saxons loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batter with just one out.
Masur entered into that jam and got a popup and a grounder back to the box to escape. She made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh by allowing the potential winning run to come to the plate with one out, but earned a strikeout and a groundout to preserve the win and earn the save.
Game Two
Alfred earned the first run of game one, but Stevens exploded for four in their next turn at-bat to make AU's only lead of the day quite short-lived. Loncar and DeOliveira had hits and the rally was capped by a two-run home run of the bat of Shirley as the Ducks went up 4-1.
Stevens added two more in the fifth; Loncar and
Madison Gemma had basehits to set the table for Shirley once again and the senior delivered a 2-RBI double to chase starter Sara Schaefer from the mound.
Alfred countered with two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to cut the lead all the way to 6-5. In the Stevens seventh, Loncar, Gemma, and Shirley knocked basehits and came around to score.
Olivia Gemma had one ribbie and DeOlivira drove in two with a double to rightcenter that capped the scoring and gave the Ducks some breathing room.
- Stevens did not make an error in 61 chances in the field
"It was a great weekend on the road," said head coach
Emily Kaczmarek. "Our pitching has been tremendous and our offense is just starting to click. We've taken a big step forward this weekend in successfully executing in different scenarios."
