Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse | | Charles O'Brien

No. 23 Women’s Lacrosse falls to No. 10 Washington & Lee

HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 22, 2018)  – Senior Cami Santor dished out four assists and sophomore Emily Shanklin recorded her fourth hat trick of the season, but the 23-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team fell to No. 10 Washington & Lee University Sunday in a non-conference contest at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.

Senior Julianna Ricci and sophomore Kyra Bednarski each added two goals and sophomore Brianne Salera registered her first collegiate assist for the Ducks, who fell to 11-4 on the year. The loss snapped Stevens' three-game winning streak.

Jess Castelo, Cordelia Peters and Landon Shelley each totaled four points for the Generals, who earned their 10th straight victory to improve to 12-4 on the year. Washington & Lee closed the first half with seven straight goals in the final 6:35 to turn a 3-1 Stevens lead into an 8-3 halftime advantage for the Generals..

Washington & Lee held a 24-21 advantage in shots and an 11-15 edge in ground balls. Senior Stephanie Schnelzer had six saves for the Ducks. Elliot Gilbert settled down after a shaky start to record eight saves to earn the victory for the Generals. The visitors also earned 18 of the 24 draws in the contest with Shanklin and Santor combining for five of Stevens' six draws.

A controlled Stevens defensive effort disrupted the Washington & Lee offense in the early going, causing four turnovers over the first 5:39. The Ducks were able to take advantage of the miscues, with Shanklin finding the back of the net twice to give Stevens an early 2-0 lead. The sophomore has 29 goals on the year.

The Generals were finally able to solve Schnelzer when Brianna Hayes took a Cordelia Peters pass and bounced a ball into the net. Ricci answered two minutes later off a pretty feed from Santor to reclaim a two-goal lead for the home team.

Defense remained the order of the day for the majority of the first half. Neither team was able to find shooting space or maintain an offensive rhythm. The teams combined for just five shots over a 15-minute stretch before the Generals seized control of the game. Shelley beat Schnelzer with 6:35 remaining in the opening half to break the scoreless spell. Washington & Lee won the ensuing draw control and consecutive Stevens fouls led to a free position goal for Collette Murray, tying the game at three. Dani Murray earned her second consecutive draw control and then converted a free position shot to give the Generals their first lead of the game. Washington & Lee scored three times on five first-half free position shots. The Generals added three free-position goals in the second half. Bednarski had Stevens' tallied Stevens' lone FPS goal on the day.

Washington & Lee scored added four more goals over the next 4:05 to increase its lead to 8-3 at the intermission.

Bednarski scored two of the first three tallies of the second half to pull the Ducks to within four. The Syracuse, New York native has 47 goals in her second season on Castle Point, bringing her career total to 98. Both Bednarski and Ricci (97) are within striking distance of the 100-career goal mark.

A draw control win returned possession to Washington & Lee and Murray scored her second goal of the game to halt Stevens' comeback hopes. The Generals tallied five of the final seven goals to provide the final margin of victory.

Up Next: No 23 Women's Lacrosse travels to Troy, New York for an Empire 8 Conference matchup with The Sage Colleges. It will be the final road contest of the season.
