Softball Moves to 6-0 in E8 with Sweep of Sage

WEEHAWKEN, N.J. (April 8, 2018) – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team stayed perfect in the Empire 8 with a Sunday sweep of The Sage Colleges. The Ducks won 5-2 and then run-ruled the Gators 9-0 in the nightcap of a doubleheader that was moved from Albany to Weehawken.

Game One
Stevens struck first with a run in the top of the third; the Ducks batted in the top half because the games were officially home contests for Sage. Samantha Schattin led off the third with a double over the centerfielder's head. A single by Farryl Groder and a sac fly by Corinne Loncar brought her around to score.

Sage scored what turned out to be their only two runs of the day in the home half of the fifth to take a 2-1 lead. Stevens starter Jessica Masur was effective, tossing 4.2 innings with two strikeouts.

Christine LaRochelle took over the pitching duties in the middle of the fifth, and did not allow a hit or walk to pick up the win and allow the Ducks to mount their comeback.

Stevens tied it in the sixth following a pinch-hit double by Amanda Delorme, who ended up scampering home on a wild pitch with two outs to tie the score.

With the score knotted in the seventh, Groder, Loncar, and Madison Gemma all had hits to start the inning off; Gemma's 2-RBI double down the rightfield line was the biggest hit of the game. Delorme added another double to drive in Gemma and make the score 5-2, and LaRochelle closed it out for her fourth win of the year.

Game Two
The Ducks scored a run in the first inning without a hit; Schattin walked to start the game and a sac bunt, steal and sac fly by Loncar scored her.

The Ducks exploded for four runs in the second. Melissa Alfonso socked a two-run homer to leftfield and Farryl Groder added an RBI single through the right side later in the inning to make the count 4-0.

Stevens tacked on three unearned runs in the fourth. Lauren Shirley had a 2-RBI double to left to plate the final two runs and give the Ducks the important 8-run cushion.

Meanwhile, pitcher Marissa Cappello was cruising along on her way to her second shutout in three outings. She allowed just two hits and struck out nine Gators in five innings of work.

Alfonso singled and scored on Groder's sac fly in the fifth for an insurance run, and Cappello struck out the side in the fifth to emphatically shut the door on Sage's day.

  • Julia DeCandia singled in her only at-bat and stole a base
  • Madison Gemma was 3-7 with two doubles
  • Schattin, Groder and Alfonso all had four hits on the afternoon
  • Delorme stroked doubles in three-straight plate appearances
  • The Ducks are now 9-7  overall and above .500 for the first time this season.
