Softball Edged by Utica in Empire 8 Opener

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (May 4, 2018) – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team's seventh-inning rally came up just short as three-seed Utica College escaped with a 2-1 win over the #2-seed Ducks on the first day of the double-elimination Empire 8 Tournament on Friday.
 
Stevens fell behind 1-0 in the third, when Madison Judge pulled an RBI groundout to the rightside with one out, which scored Bridgid Johndrow, who had walked. Stevens starter Christine LaRochelle was able to wiggle out of the jam without further damage.
 
The Pioneers scratched across one more run by playing small ball in the fifth. A hit batter, sac bunt and RBI single by Jamie Miller doubled the Utica lead to 2-0.
 
Gabby Caccamo was dealing for the Pioneers; over the first six shutout innings she scattered three hits and allowed just one walk.
 
Stevens started the seventh trailing 2-0 but seemed to finally figure our Caccamo. Madison Gemma lined out to third base to begin the frame. Lauren Shirley then hammered a double to rightfield – her second of the game – and the next two batters reached on errors to load the bases with just one out.
 
Melissa Alfonso came through a clutch RBI single, to score pinch-runner Victoria Kapp, but the Ducks ran into problems on the basepaths, and Utica was able to gun down two runners on the play to escape the jam and earn the victory.
 
LaRochelle pitched well, surrendering just the two runs in a complete-game effort. Caccamo allowed just one unearned run on her way to victory.
 
  • Shirley had the only two extra-basehits of the game and was the only Duck with more than one hit in the game
  • Farryl Groder and Gina DeOliveira had the other hits for Stevens
  • Jamie Miller had two hits for the Pioneers
  • The Ducks did not make an error in the field
 
Up Next
Stevens will await the loser of Friday's St. John Fisher-Alfred Matchup and play that team at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. If victorious, they will play again at 4 p.m. for the right to advance to the championship on Sunday.
