HOBOKEN, N.J. (May 6, 2018) – No. 20 Saint John Fisher College won its seventh consecutive Empire 8 Women's Lacrosse Championship on Sunday, topping No. 24 Stevens Institute of Technology 14-6 and avenging its 11-4 defeat to the Ducks during the regular season.
Since that last meeting on March 31, Fisher has now won 12-straight games.
The Cardinals scored two goals in the first two minutes on Sunday and earned the first three draw controls. But
Victoria Alvarez came up with a key interception to help set up the Ducks' first goal – a free position shot by
Julianna Ricci – as the Ducks temporarily stymied the early Fisher onslaught.
But the Cardinals resumed their run, netting the next three goals. Mallory Eyemer and Claire Bollin had two each as Fisher leaped out to a 5-1 lead.
Tara Ravoli provided a spark for Stevens, winning back-to-back draw controls which led to Stevens' second goal, scored by
Hannah Condren with an assist to
Kyra Bednarski.
Bollin and Eyemer finished with three goals each in the opening half, as the Cardinals carried a 9-2 lead into the break. Fisher was a perfect 7-7 in clears in the opening period, while the Ducks were just 3-9. The Ducks committed 12 turnovers and 23 fouls in the first half.
Though Stevens kept it closer in the second period and prevented a true runaway, the Cardinals scored five goals in the second period to maintain their lead and win the title.
Bednarski scored twice in the second half, and Ricci finished with two goals as well.
Eyemer finished with five to lead the Fisher offense, and Morgan Hayes stopped half the shots she saw to earn the win in goal for Fisher.
Fisher has now won eight of the last 10 Empire 8 titles – the only exceptions were back-to-back championships by the Ducks in 2010 and 2011.
Kyra Bednarski,
Tara Ravoli, and
Cami Santor of the Ducks were named to the Empire 8 All-Tournament Team.
