Stevens blanks NYU 2-0 to open Engineering Cup

HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 7, 2018)  – Junior Julia Panko and freshman Fiona Matthews each found the back of the net as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team opened the 15th Annual Engineering Cup with a 2-0 victory over New York University Friday night at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.

Panko's first-half marker proved to be the game-winner as a stingy Stevens defense kept the Violets off the scoreboard, in handing NYU its first loss of the season. Stevens' cross-river rival entered the match averaging four goals per game. Matthews' first collegiate goal provided a little breathing room in the second half.

The victory moved to Stevens to 2-1 on the year. With Swarthmore topping Vassar 2-1 in the nightcap, the Ducks and the Garnet are tied atop the Engineering Cup standings, however Stevens holds a one-goal advantage over Swarthmore in the tiebreaker should both teams win on Sunday.

Turning Point
  • After a quiet opening 17 minutes, Stevens broke through thanks to a strong individual effort by Panko.
  • The Millstone Township, New Jersey native dribbled through an NYU tackle and struck the ball into the net with a shot taken in stride from outside the box.
  • The tally was the 20th career goal for Panko, who moved within three goals of Salme Cook for 10th place on the all-time list.

Inside the Numbers
  • Stevens outshot NYU 10-5, including a 4-1 edge in shots on goal.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Izzy DiDario posted her first career clean sheet.
  • The Ducks totaled eight corner kicks against only three by NYU.
  • Each team committed seven fouls.
  • Sophomore Taylor Schaad led all players with four shots, including two on net.

Unsung Heroes
  • The Stevens defense corps frustrated NYU throughout the match, holding the Violets 20 shots below their season average. Perhaps equally as impressive, Stevens did not allow NYU to garner any sustained offensive momentum throughout the first half, keeping the visitors backpedaling throughout the opening 45 minutes.
