A-O'K! O’Kelly Breaks Through in the 100th Minute to send No. 20/20 Women’s Soccer Over FDU-Florham 1-0

O'Kelly breaks scoreless tie with last-second goal.

HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 15, 2019)  – Junior Erica O'Kelly netted her first goal of the season in the 100th minute to send No. 20/20 Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer over Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham Campus 1-0 Tuesday evening in a MAC Freedom fixture played at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.

With a second overtime period less than a minute away, sophomore Ally Wanzor corralled a ball in the midfield. The Jackson, New Jersey native darted toward the near sideline before turning her attention upfield. Wanzor entered the attacking third and attempted to thread a ball to senior Gabby Saade, who was set up outside the 18.

The pass attempt was deflected by an FDU defender and the ball ricocheted off a second and headed towards the FDU goal. The Devils' Dari Lyons charged hard towards her own net, attempting to prevent Saade from reclaiming possession. Saade, Lyons, FDU goalkeeper Brianna Branagan and the ball all converged 12 yards out with the ball caroming off of Branagan, who had come well off her line to the feet of O'Kelly.

O'Kelly collected the loose ball, nimbly stepped around Branagan and directed a left-footed shot across the six-yard box into the far-right corner of the goal, sparking a celebration on the pitch. The marker was the Brielle, New Jersey native's third career goal and her second career game-winner.

Junior Erika McCarthy made a pair of saves in spinning her first clean sheet of the season as the Ducks won their sixth straight to improve to 8-3-1 on the year and 3-0 in conference action. Stevens has been victorious in each of its 15 regular season conference fixtures. The performance extended the Ducks' scoreless streak to 458:18.

Branagan made 11 saves for FDU-Florham, who dropped its second straight to fall to 10-4-1 and 0-3 in league play.

Inside the Numbers
  • Stevens spent the majority of the match in attacking third. The Ducks fired off a season-high 30 shots, including 15 in the second half. For the evening, Stevens held a 30-5 edge in shots and a 14-2 advantage in shots on net.
  • Wanzor took a match-high eight attempts, which included five shots on goal. Erica Martins led FDU-Florham with two.
  • Carlie Mullins bailed out Branagan with a pair of saves.
  • The Ducks earned seven corners, while the Devils earned just two (and none after the opening half).
  • The teams combined for 26 fouls.

Unsung Heroes
  • Offensive pressure throughout the evening kept possession in Stevens' attacking third throughout most of the evening. The tilted field held the 18th-highest scoring offense in the country to just five shots, including two over the match's final 55 minutes. The Devils did not have a shot on goal after the 45th minute.

From the Sidelines (Head Coach Jeff Parker)
  • "Wonderful performance from our group tonight. [We] kept going despite facing a low block and [a] team trying to prevent us from scoring. Some nights are more difficult than others in finding the back of the net - this was one of those occasions. We showed resiliency and mental toughness to keep going forward despite those difficulties. [An] important three points and now the focus is on King's on Saturday."
