HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 23, 2019) – Sophomore

Allison Buffenbarger both found the back of the net, but it was not enough as the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team dropped a 3-2 contest Wednesday against DeSales at DeBaun Athletic Complex.
With the loss, the Ducks fall to 9-7 overall and 2-3 in MAC Freedom competition this season. Stevens has now dropped each of their last three contests by one goal.
DeSales, meanwhile, scored three straight goals after falling behind 1-0 and improved to 10-7 on the year and 4-1 in conference play.
In the 21st minute of the game, Appleby scored her third goal of the season off an assist from
Brynn Froehlich to give the Ducks an early 1-0 lead.
The Bulldogs responded immediately, however, scoring just 26 seconds later to tie the contest at one.
After DeSales netted a pair of goals in the third quarter to take a 3-1 edge, Buffenbarger was able to cut the deficit to one in the 48th minute thanks to a pass from the
Michaela Thompson from the top of the circle off a penalty corner.
The Ducks were not able to add another in the final stanza despite out-shooting DeSales 9-1 in the fourth quarter.
Turning Point
- With less than 10 second left in the third, DeSales was able to earn their second penalty corner of the contest.
- The Bulldogs' initial shot went off the foot of a Stevens defender to earn a second corner for DeSales with 44:59 on the clock.
- On the second penalty corner in the sequence, DeSales' freshman Catie McGrath deposited a deflected shot into the left side of the net for her second goal of the game give the Bulldogs a 3-1 edge."
Inside the Numbers
- The Ducks were able to out-shoot DeSales 19-12 in the loss including an 11-9 advantage in shots on goal.
- Stevens' sophomore goalkeeper registered five saves in the contest while Bulldog goalie Katarina Polyvoiu produced nine saves.
- The assist for Thompson was her team-best sixth assist of the season, besting her career-high total of five from last season.
- Thomspon and Jaymie Fiebel led the way for Stevens with four shots apiece while Fieble had a team-high three shots on goal.
- The Ducks drop to 6-5 this season in games decided by one goal.
Unsung Hero
- Despite not scoring the match, Fiebel was extremely effective in the contest, creating multiple scoring opportunities for the Ducks with four shots and three shots on goal.
