DOYLESTOWN, Pa. (October 26, 2019) – Sophomore
Gianna Nitti and senior
Julia Panko provided the offense for the second straight match as No. 18/20 Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer defeated Delaware Valley University 3-0 Saturday in a MAC Freedom fixture played at James Work Memorial Stadium.
Sophomore
Izzy DiDario and junior
Erika McCarthy combined to post the Ducks' sixth clean sheet of the season as Stevens improved to 11-3-1 on the year and a perfect 6-0 in conference play. The Ducks have won nine straight matches to earn the top seed in the MAC Freedom Tournament and have clinched a share of the conference's regular-season. Stevens can win the crown outright with either a victory over Eastern University on Nov. 2 or a Misericordia loss to DeSales. Stevens has won its last 18 matches against conference opponents.
Haley Young made 10 saves for Delaware Valley, who fell to 1-11-2 on the year and 0-5 in league play. The Aggies have dropped 11 straight.
Nitti opened scoring in the 20th minute. Junior
Emily Damrell sent a cross towards the box, but a Delaware Valley defender cleared the ball away from the dangerous area. Sophomore
Fiona Matthews took the ensuing throw-in and found Nitti in space. The Fort Lee, New Jersey native pushed forward about 10 yards before sending a ball towards the box from well outside the 18. Young was able to get a finger on the try, but the ball was well on its way into the net with the DelVal keeper made contact with it. The marker was Nitti's second of the season, setting a new career high.
Panko scored in the 28th and 88th minutes to post her second multi-goal match of the season. The Millstone Township, New Jersey native converted a penalty to double Stevens' advantage and then provided the game's final margin with blast from just inside the top of the 18-yard box. Sophomore
Ginger Harris began the play, keeping a ball inbounds that appeared destined to cross the end line. Harris found Matthews, who then touched the ball over to Panko for the score. The brace moved Panko to 98 career points as she aims to become the fourth player in program history to cross the 100-point threshold.
It is believed to be the first meeting between the programs.
