BALTIMORE, Md. (November 15, 2019) – Led by double-digit kills from seniors
Casey King and
Sara Hain as well as a .325 team attack percentage, the Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team opened the NCAA Baltimore, Maryland Regional with a 3-0 victory over Carnegie Mellon Friday at Newton H. White Center.
The Ducks improve their winning streak to 12 straight matches have now won an NCAA Tournament contest in three of the past four seasons and will look to advance to the Regional Final for the first time since 2016.
King was fantastic in the victory for Stevens with a season-high 16 kills to go along with 11 digs for her 12th double-double of the season. Hain, meanwhile, added 11 kills while hitting .400 in the match to help the Ducks earn their 13th sweep of the season.
Erika Foose and Anna Cao led the way offensively for CMU with seven kills apiece and combined to hit .387. The Tartans, who were ranked 22nd in the final regular season AVCA Poll, as they saw their season end at 22-8 overall.
Sophomore
Kathleen Riegner was also a force in the victory, registered 41 assists and four service aces in the win. It was the first time this season that the 2019 First Team All-MAC Freedom selection has produced at least 40 assists in a match that lasted just three sets.
Stevens will now advance to the NCAA Regional Semifinal contest to take on the winner of Susquehanna and Westminster Saturday at 4:00 p.m. in Baltimore, Md.
Match Point
- Hain, the 2019 MAC Freedom Player of the Year, put down her 11th kill of the match to seal the 25-11 victory in the final set for the Ducks.
Volleys and Points
- After trading points back-and-forth in the opening set, the Ducks created separation with an 11-2 run to make the score 19-11.
- With the score 22-13 in favor of Stevens, the Tartans began to make their run as they scored 10 of the next 12 points and fought off three set points to cut the deficit to 24-23.
- The Ducks held on late, however, taking advantage of a bad set from Maia So-Holloway to win the set 25-23.
- Tied at 5-5 in the second set, Stevens again made an early run to generate some breathing room, rattling off four consecutive points highlighted by three straight kills from King.
- CMU was able to claw their way back into the set and make the score 14-11 but could not get any closer as the Ducks went on a quick 6-1 run to extend the lead to eight.
- Leading 23-16, Stevens got kills from Allie Morton and Riegner to put the set away and go up 2-0 in the match.
- The third set was a dominant starting effort for the Ducks as Stevens scored the first 12 points of the set to take a commanding lead.
- The 12-0 run was the longest in the three-year tenure of head coach Annie McShea and the most consecutive points scored by the Ducks since they rattled off 13 straight on Sept. 3, 2016 against Rhodes.
- The Ducks got three service aces from Riegner as well as two kills and two blocks from senior Shelby Stewart in the run.
- Stevens was able to cruise to the set win and earn the sweep to advance to the NCAA Regional Semifinals for the ninth time in program history.
Inside the Numbers
- The Ducks were fantastic at the service line in the victory, registering eight service aces compared to none from CMU.
- Elizabeth Chu (18), Allie Morton (14), King (11) and Jillian Roumbanis (10) all produced double-digit digs in the win.
- The .325 attack percentage for Stevens was the fourth-best output of the season as a team.
- Morton finished just shy of generating a double-double with 14 digs and nine kills while hitting .240.
- Despite only taking 12 swings in the match, Stewart added seven kills to her ledger and hit a team-high .417.
- Vivian Beaudoin, who came into the match second on the team with 2.15 kills per set, was held to just four kills and an -.091 attack percentage for the Tartans.
- CMU was able to out-block Stevens 5-3 in the match but produced just two blocks after the first set.
Unsung Heros
- Chu, the 2019 MAC Freedom Defensive Player of the Year, and Roumbanis, a 2019 Honorable Mention All-MAC Freedom honoree, combined for 28 digs and did not commit a receiving error.

- "We're viewing this playoff as bonus time. Our goals are to have fun, play as a family and to execute as best we can and we did just that today. Carnegie Mellon started to find some holes in our defense, but we were able to fight back with a tough serve and a well-balanced offense. We're looking forward to tomorrow."

- The Ducks will take on Susquehanna tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. inside Newton H. White Center.
- The River Hawks knocked off Stevens 3-1 earlier this season in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania.
