Women’s Soccer Extends Streak to 14 with 3-0 Victory over UMASS Boston in NCAA Opening Round

Three different players score as Ducks advance in NCAA Tournament

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. (November 16, 2019)  – Senior Gabby Saade broke through in the third minute to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team over UMASS Boston 3-0 Saturday in an NCAA Opening Round fixture played at a frigid Middlebury College's FieldTurf Field.

Freshman Catalina Abusada and sophomore Fiona Matthews also scored for the Ducks, who won their 14th straight match to improve to 16-3-1. The 14 straight wins matches a program record for consecutive victories, which was originally set in the 2005 season. Stevens has won an NCAA match for the fourth time in the last five seasons in leveling its all-time NCAA record a 10-10-2.

Maria Spylios made 10 saves for UMASS Boston, who saw their two-match winning streak come to an end. The Beacons finish the 2019 season with a 19-3-1 mark. It was the first meeting between the programs.

With a match-time temperature of 24 degrees, Saade broke through with the first goal of the match for the second straight contest, although this one came in the fourth minute. The West Windsor, New Jersey native received sophomore Ally Wanzor's feed from the right edge of the 18-yard box. Saade calmly took the feed and fired a shot that tucked in neatly under the crossbar for her eighth goal of the season. She's one point shy of matching a career high in both goals (9) and points (24).

Abusada netted her second goal of the year in the 40th minute to push the advantage to two. Matthews connected on a header in the 69th minute to provide the final margin. However, a smothering offense in the first half produced 11 shots and kept the Beacons off-balance and when UMASS Boston was able to hold possession in the attacking third, the Ducks defense did not allow clean looks. Sophomore Izzy DiDario and junior Erika McCarthy totaled four saves in the team's 11th clean sheet of the season. Stevens has not conceded a goal over the last 559:41. Over its current winning streak, the Ducks have conceded just four goals, while posting 10 shutouts.

Turning Point
  • Holding a 1-nil lead, Abusada essentially put the match out of reach in the 40th minute.
  • The Berkeley Heights, New Jersey native found herself open inside the scoring area and rang a shot just inside the near-post to give the Ducks a two-goal margin.

Inside the Numbers
  • Juniors Kaitlyn Casiano and Erica O'Kelly each recorded an assist, as did Wanzor.
  • Stevens outshot UMASS Boston 18-6, including a 13-4 edge in shots on goal. Saade led all players with six shots, including four that registered on frame. Nine different Ducks fired off at least one attempt.
  • The Ducks scored three times against Spylios, the only team to do so this season.
  • Each team earned one corner, with Stevens' coming in the first half and the Beacons' claimed theirs in the second.
  • The teams combined for 15 fouls and one yellow.

Unsung Heroes
  • The defensive efforts kept the Beacons' leading scorer, Grace McGettrick off the scoresheet entirely. The 14-goal scorer did not register a single shot.

From the Sidelines (Head Coach Jeff Parker)
  • "Good result for us today. Some tough conditions, but it was really important, and we've been doing it all year, about getting an early goal; that was really important for us. We were able to set the early tone and enabled to do some different things. The second goal was even more important and then we were able to get the third one in the second half, which was nice. Got a lot of people a lot of NCAA experience today, which was great, now we have a big task in front of tomorrow in playing the home team here, but, I think we are going to be up for it and we've been preparing all year for this and we are looking forward to that tomorrow."
