No. 18/18 Women’s Soccer Extends Streak to 11 with 5-0 Victory Over Eastern on Senior Day

Panko and Saade combine for three goals and two assists as Ducks secure regular-season title.

HOBOKEN, N.J. (November 2, 2019)  – Sophomore Ally Wanzor broke through in the fourth minute as No. 18/18 Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer scored three times in the opening 24 minutes to defeat Eastern University 5-0 Saturday in a MAC Freedom fixture played at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.

Senior Julia Panko had two goals and an assist and classmate Gabby Saade had a goal and an assist for the Ducks, who won their 11th straight match to improve to 13-3-1 on the year and a perfect 7-0 in conference play. The victory secured the conference's regular-season title.

Eastern's Grace Schreckengast made a career-high 15 saves for the Eagles, who ended the season on a five-match losing streak in falling to 7-10-1 overall and 2-4-1 in MAC Freedom play. The contest was Eastern's final MAC Freedom match as the program will move to the MAC Commonwealth on July 1, 2020. The Eagles dropped to 0-7 all-time against the Ducks.

Sophomore Taylor Whitlock was the other Duck to find the back of the net as Stevens continued its recent run of success against familiar foes. Over the program's last 47 matches against conference opponents, the Ducks have posted a 43-1-3 record, including each of the last 19.

Prior to the match, the program recognized Panko and Saade in an on-field Senior Day ceremony. Collectively, the pair have been a part of three straight conference championships, four league regular-season titles, three NCAA appearances, an overall record of 59-12-5, including a mark of 34-1-2 against conference competition. In the classroom, Panko and Saade are on pace to finish with the highest combined GPA of any Stevens women's soccer graduating class and have garnered multiple academic honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America for their efforts in the classroom.

Sophomore Izzy DiDario earned the victory, making one save over 45 minutes to lower her goals-against average to a MAC Freedom-leading 0.438. Junior Erika McCarthy stopped one shot in relief to DiDario, as the tandem combined for their eighth clean sheet of the season.

Turning Point
  • Wanzor put the Ducks on the board in the fourth minute. The Jackson, New Jersey native collected a ball in the center of the 18-yard box, deftly moved the ball in place to deter the Eastern defense and rocketed a left-footed shot solidly into the back of the net for her fourth goal of the season.

Inside the Numbers
  • The Ducks fired a season-high 42 shots, including a season-best 21 shots on goal. The 42 shots were the most since the team attempted 46 shots against Babson College on Sept. 9, 2017. Eastern took seven shots, with just two registering on net.
  • Stevens out-earned Eastern in corners, 10-3, including 7-2 in the opening half.
  • Saade, Panko and Wanzor each turned in multi-point performances. Panko moved into third place all-time on the program's career goals scored list.
  • With at least one more match, Saade has a chance to crack the program's all-time top-five in career points. The West Windsor, New Jersey native has amassed 75 points during her time on Castle Point to tie for ninth all-time. Alumnae Melissa Shankweiler and Kathleen Schuckers are tied for sixth with 79.
  • Eastern's Carli Sitkowski earned the contest's lone yellow card in the 67th minute, leaving the wall early after a misdirection on a free kick.
  • Eastern's Meghan Coulton bailed Schreckengast in the first half, deflecting a Saade try in the 20th minute after the Eagles goalkeeper was caught out of position.
  • Stevens kept the Eagles off the scoresheet for the first time in conference play this season.

Unsung Heroes
  • Stevens offensive tempo kept Eastern out of the attacking third for most of the first half. The underlying result was keeping the Eagles' top scorer, Nicole Weenink off the scoresheet. Weenink had just one touch over the opening 30 minutes and finished with five shots, including one shot on goal.

From the Sidelines (Head Coach Jeff Parker)
  • "Beautiful day and a great crowd on DeBaun. Effective performance from our group this afternoon. Always good to get an early breakthrough and it allowed us to make some important changes for us going forward. Always good to spend time with our families following another senior day. Short turnaround for Tuesday night's semifinal, but we'll do what we need to to make sure we are ready."
