Women’s Volleyball Earns Spot in MAC Freedom Championship with Sweep of Misericordia

Ducks Hit .355 as a Team in the Win

HOBOKEN, N.J. (November 6, 2019) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team hit .355 while holding Misericordia University to -.025 to help the Ducks advance to the MAC Freedom Championship Match with a 3-0 victory Wednesday inside Canavan Arena.

Stevens has now won 10 consecutive contests this season and has advanced to the conference tournament championship in each of the last eight seasons as they improve their overall record to 19-11.

With the loss, Misericordia ends their season at 20-17 overall after advancing to the MAC Freedom Tournament for the second straight year.

Senior Casey King led the way offensively for the Ducks, racking up 11 kills while hitting .333 to go along with seven digs in the win.

The Ducks will now advance to the MAC Freedom Championship where they will take on #2 Eastern Saturday at 4:00 p.m. in Hoboken.

Volleys and Points
  • In the opening set, Stevens was able create early separation with a 5-1 run to begin the match.
  • After the Cougars climbed back into the contest and made the score 8-7, the Ducks responded with a 7-2 run to make the score 15-9.
  • Leading 20-16 late in the set, Stevens scored five of the final seven points of the set to win 25-18.
  • The Ducks jumped out to an early lead again in the second set, grabbing nine of the first 11 points.
  • Stevens was not done, however, pushing the edge to as many as 16 points with a 22-6 margin.
  • Misericordia was able to put their score in double-digits before Allie Morton eventually ended the set with a kill.
  • Much like in the first two sets, the Ducks were able to race out to an early lead with five straight points to take a 5-1 advantage.
  • Trailing 12-3, the Cougars were able to cut the deficit to just four with five consecutive points of their own, forcing a Stevens timeout.
  • The Ducks responded to the stoppage in a big way, winning six of the next seven points to extend the lead to 18-9.
  • Stevens wasted little time putting the match away, grabbing seven of the final eight points in the match to win 25-11.
Match Point
  • An attack error by Misericordia's Tara Welliver was able to clinch the 12th sweep of the year for the Ducks.
Inside the Numbers
  • Seniors Sara Hain and Shelby Stewart both registered a .500 hitting percentage in the match with Hain producing six kills and Stewart putting down six.
  • Stewart, a First Team All-MAC Freedom selection, matched a career-high with four service aces in the match as well while Kathleen Riegner added four service aces of her own.
  • In total, Stevens produced 10 service aces in the contest as a team compared to just one from Misericordia.
  • The .355 attack percentage was the third-best output and the -.025 opponents hitting percentage was the second-best of the season for the Ducks.
  • It is the fourth consecutive season Stevens has had a winning streak of at least 10 games.
Unsung Hero
  • Freshman Allie Morton was extremely efficient in the contest, picking up six kills to go along with six digs while hitting .357.
Chasing History
  • Hain, the 2019 MAC Freedom Player of the Year, raised her season attack percentage to .379 in the win while improving her career percentage to .341. If the season ended today, Hain would break the career record for attack percentage while being just .002 away from her own single season record of .381.
  • After becoming the program's all-time career blocks leader earlier this season, Stewart added three more to her ledger to bring her career total to 477. The First Team All-MAC Freedom honoree leads all active players in NCAA Division III and is ninth across all divisions in career blocks.
From the Sidelines (Head Coach Annie McShea)
  • "I'm happy with our full team performance of late, and I'm feeling like we have something special going. Our chemistry on and off the court makes playing together really run. Misericordia was a solid team, but with the number of weapons we have it's hard to predict what we're going to do next. We're hoping to continue riding this feeling long into the postseason."
Next Up
  • Stevens will host Eastern Saturday in the MAC Championship match with an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships on the line.
  • The Ducks swept the Eagles 25-7, 25-20, 25-18 earlier this season at Canavan Arena.
