MEMPHIS, Tenn. (March 18, 2019) – Junior
Kyra Bednarski set a new program record with 10 goals, but the Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team was unable to overcome an early deficit and fell to Rhodes College 22-16 Monday in a non-conference matchup at Mason Field.
Junior
Emily Shanklin scored four times to record her third hat trick of the season and freshman
Morgan Westerby added a pair of goals for the Ducks, who fell to 2-4. It was the first-ever meeting between the programs.
Baylee Barker netted eight goals and Aidan Pike scored seven times for the Lynx, who improved to 6-3. Rhodes has won four straight.
"We had moments that looked good and individuals that played well," said head coach
Karen Shaddock. "[However,] we need a full 60 minutes and that is what we are going to keep working on."
Bednarski netted five goals in each half and scored three straight goals over a 2:14 stretch bridging the halves to reach the milestone. The Syracuse, New York native scored her record-breaking goal with 9:05 remaining in the second half. Stevens Hall of Famer
Valerie Barnhart held the previous record after scoring nine goals on three different occasions over the 2002 and 2003 seasons. Bednarski added three assists to finish with a program-record 13 points. Her 10-goal performance is tied for the second-most in any Division III game this season and Bednarski's 13 total points is tied for the fifth-most in Division III this season.
"I am happy and proud of Kyra for her performance today [in] setting [new] school records," Shaddock added.
Sophomores
Peyton Taylor and
Olivia Demetres combined for nine saves, with Taylor suffering the loss. Lauren Lazure had nine stops for Rhodes.
Barker opened scoring three minutes in, beating Taylor after the Phillipsburg, New Jersey had previously stuffed Rhodes' leading scorer on her first attempt of the game. The Lynx scored the first four goals of the game to take an early 4-0 lead, before Stevens scored five of the next six goals to tie the game at 5 on a Shanklin marker.
Madison Rubino sparked a 6-0 run for the home team, netting her 11th of the year with just under 12 minutes left in the first half as the home team opened an 11-5 advantage. Bednarski and Annika Hedlund exchanged goals before the high-scoring junior combined with Shanklin for the next four goals to draw the Ducks with two (12-10) early in the second half.
The teams alternated the next six goals with the Ducks unable to draw any closer than two. Barker netted her 40th of the season to spark another Rhodes run, before Bednarski scored twice in a 37-second span to trim the margin to three. Shanklin scored on the power play to again bring Stevens within two, but. Pike collected her 32nd of the year to halt Stevens' momentum. The Lynx scored the final three goals of the game to produce the final margin.
For the game, Rhodes outshot the Ducks. 32-30, including a 31-25 edge in shots on goal. The Ducks attempted 30 shots for the second straight game. Individually, Bednarski fired a game-high 18 shots, with 15 registering on net, while Barker took 11 to pace Rhodes. Barnhart also holds the program record for shots in a game with 22.
Defensively, Shanklin and freshmen
Natalie Fitzpatrick and
Meredith Conlin each caused a team-high three turnovers as the Ducks forced 21 miscues by the Lynx, while committing 19. Hannah Swinerton matched Shanklin and Fitzpatrick with three caused turnovers.

Barker led all players with 12 draw controls helping Rhodes to a 25-15 advantage. Shanklin topped the Ducks with four draw controls, while Westerby earned four. Sophomore

Haley Hanrahan added one for the Ducks.
Stevens went 15-for-20 on clears, while Rhodes was successful on 11 of its 15 clear attempts. The Ducks scored on three of their six free-position shots, while the Lynx converted seven of their eight FPS tries.Bednarski accounted for all three of Stevens' free-position goals.
