Softball Drops Two at Stockton

The Ducks fell to Stockton in both games of a non-conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon on the road.

GALLOWAY, N.J. (April 18, 2019) – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team fell to Stockton University in both games of a non-conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon in Galloway, New Jersey.

Game One (L, 11-3)
Samantha Huetter (7-3) led the Ospreys on the mound with four strikeouts in five innings. Senior Christine LaRochelle (4-8) pitched the first 2.2 innings for the Ducks before sophomore Jessie Masur pitched the final 1.1 innings. 

Stockton took the lead when they scored five runs in the bottom of the second. Alexandra Cosenzo scored the first run after Lilly James reached first on a fielding error and advanced to second on the throw. Madison Kelly registered the first RBI of the day when she brought in James as she reached first on a fielder's choice. 

Meg Murzello followed with another RBI on a fielder's choice before Morgan DiVello hit a two-run double down the left field line to send home the final runs of the inning. 

The Ospreys added three more runs in the third inning as James hit an RBI double and Kelly doubled to left center, allowing James and Liani Ortiz to score. 

In the bottom of the fourth, Ortiz and Nicole Petrovich each recorded an RBI single and Kelly registered an RBI on a groundout to second base to give Stockton an 11-0 lead. 

The Ducks cut their lead in the fifth inning when junior Gina DeOliveira singled to center field and advanced to second on the throw, bring in sophomore Ada Heinze for Stevens' first run of the game. Senior Katie Tirabassi followed with a two-run double to center field. However, Huetter struck out her final batter of the day to end the game.
  
Game Two (L, 5-4)
Junior Samantha Schattin hit a leadoff double before advancing to third as freshman Meg Halloran singled on a bunt. DeOliveira then loaded the bases as she was hit by a pitch. 

With Tirabassi at the plate, Schattin scored while Halloran and DeOliveira advanced to second and third, respectively, when Stockton's Marissa Semeraro released a wild pitch. Tirabassi brought in Halloran on a sac-fly and junior Abigail Circelli sent home DeOliveira on a groundout to third base to give Stevens a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the inning. 

Casey Schieda answered with an RBI single to kick off the bottom of the inning and put Stockton on the board. After stealing third, Schieda scored on a sac-fly by Ortiz to cut the lead to one run. 

Senior Julia DeCandia helped extend Stevens' lead to two with sac-fly in the top of the second only for the Ospreys to tie the game at four in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single from Angie Dunphy and a sac-bunt from DiVello to send in Carli Shaw. 

The next four innings were scoreless until Cosenzo hit a walk-off RBI single with one out in the bottom of the seventh to complete the sweep over the Ducks. 

Huetter (8-3) grabbed her second win of the day as she pitched the final inning for the Ospreys without allowing a hit. Senior Marissa Cappello (9-3) pitched 6.2 innings for the Ducks and tallied two strikeouts. 

Inside the Numbers
  • Delorme stole one base in each game, while Halloran and Schattin each snagged a bag in game two.
  • DeOliveira worked two walks in the second game. 
  • Tirabassi played first base in game one while Cottell took over in game two. Each collected six putouts in their respective games. 
  • Schattin registered a double in both games.
