ROCHESTER, N.Y. (April 27, 2019) – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team collected 28 hits across two games as they swept Nazareth College in an Empire 8 Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Flyers Field.
The Ducks registered a season-high 17 hits in the second game as they improved to 19-15 overall and 11-1 in the conference. The Golden Flyers fell to 13-19 on the year and 5-7 in E8 play as they were held to seven hits over the two contests.
Game One (W, 7-2)
Senior
Christine LaRochelle (6-9) earned the win with five strikeouts in 7.0 innings. Gabriella Corasaniti fell to 7-8 after allowing the Ducks to collect 11 hits.
Junior
Samantha Schattin and freshman
Meg Halloran began the game with two walks before advancing to second and third on a sac-bunt by junior
Gina DeOliveira. Senior
Katie Tirabassi brought in the first run of the game with a sac-fly and junior
Melissa Alfonso followed with an RBI single to give the Ducks a 2-0 lead at the conclusion of the opening frame.
Tirabassi recorded another RBI in the top of the third when she singled to center field before advancing to third on the throw. In the next inning, Halloran registered a two-run single that allowed junior
Abigail Circelli and senior
Julia DeCandia to score before Schattin was tagged out at second for the final out of the inning.
Stevens extended their lead to seven thanks to a two-run single to left center by Circelli in the top of the fifth.
The Golden Flyers were able to get on the board in the bottom of the seventh when Katherine Ruoff registered an RBI groundout for their first run of the game. Corasaniti followed with a single down the right field line to bring in Kristen Simmons before LaRochelle struck out the final batter to end game one.
Game Two (W, 10-2 / 5 inn.)
Senior
Marissa Cappello improved to 11-4 as she totaled four strikeouts. Kylie Smith (4-9) was dealt the loss after her 2.1 innings pitched.
The Ducks collected three runs in the top of the first to take a quick lead when Halloran hit an RBI double and Tirabassi recorded a two-run home run. Junior
Melissa Alfonso added two runs in the second after sending a 1-0 offering into center field for a base hit to bring in DeOliveira and Halloran.
Stevens added five more runs in the third inning as Schattin, Tirabassi and Circelli each collected an RBI while DeOliveira hit a two-run double. In the bottom of the inning, Sarah Simmons gave Nazareth two runs with her double to right center to send home K. Simmons and Madison Joseph.
Inside the Numbers
- Halloran went 6-for-7 at the plate across the two games for an impressive .857 hitting percentage.
- Schattin, DeCandia and Delorme each snagged a base on the day.
- Tirabassi led with five RBI over the two contests and Halloran led with five runs scored.
- Sophomore Siobhan Cottell registered a game-high nine putouts in the first game.
