Bednarski Nets Six, But Women’s Lacrosse Falls to Union, 16-11

Junior attackwoman extends scoring streak to 26, but Ducks fall in non-conference action.

HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 3, 2019)  – Junior Kyra Bednarski netted six goals, but Union College used a four-goal run in the second half to overtake the Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team en route a 16-11 victory Wednesday evening in a non-conference matchup at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.

Junior Emily Shanklin netted a pair of goals and Bednarski added two assists for the Ducks, who fell to 3-7.

Lindsay Gerrato scored five times and Kellie Cronin added three goals and an assist for Union, who improved to 4-3. The Dutchwomen have alternated wins and losses over their last five games. The Union victory evened the all-time series at 1 after Stevens won the first meeting in triple overtime in 2010.

Juniors Hannah Condren and Brianne Salera also found the back of the net for the Ducks, who raced out to a 6-1 lead in the first half. Freshman Morgan Westerby also registered a goal and classmate Natalie Fitzpatrick had an assist to round out Stevens' scoring.

Sophomore Olivia Demetres drew the start and made four saves. Classmate Peyton Taylor came on in relief in the second half and made a pair of saves in suffering the loss. Ellie Taney stopped five shots to earn the win.

Sophomore Haley Hanrahan won the opening draw control, which led to Bednarski beating Taney with a shot from the slot to give the Ducks an early lead after just one possession. The Syracuse, New York native beat Taney for the second time four minutes later to hand the home team a two-goal lead. Bednarski's six-goal performance extended her scoring streak to 26 and the junior attackwoman among the top 70 players in Division III with 40 goals.

Lowrey briefly slowed Stevens' offensive momentum with her fifth of the year before Bednarski netted a pair of goals 55 seconds apart to open a 6-1 lead. The Ducks scored on six of their first nine shots

Hannah Rosenberger beat Demetres to begin Union's comeback and Cronin scored with 24 seconds remaining in the opening half to trim Stevens' lead to three at the intermission.

A yellow card for a dangerous play gave the guests a power play to open the second half and Gerrato converted with her first tally of the game. Salera returned a three-goal margin before back-to-back goals drew Union within one.

Stevens ran a nifty plan in the attacking third, leading to Shanklin taking a Bednarski pass and beating Taney for her 19th of the season to return a two-goal advantage to the Ducks. The Berkley, Michigan native scored a career-high 37 goals one season ago.

The game's turning point occurred after Shanklin's first marker, when the Dutchwomen successfully converted three straight free-position attempts to take their first lead of the game at 9-8. Gerrato won the ensuing draw control and Mallory Toolan buried a shot to push Union's lead to two.

Shanklin beat Taney with a shot as she was falling away from the goal to draw the Ducks within one, but Gerrato earned the next draw and Cronin scored off another free-position shot to keep Union in front. The guests would go on to score six of the final eight goals to come away with the win. Condren's fifth goal of the season provided the final margin.

Union outshot Stevens 35-20, including a 22-16 margin in shots on net. Gerrato took a game-high 12 shots, while Bednarski led the Ducks with eight.

Strong winds blowing into the DeBaun Athletic Complex, combined with strong sun glare, regularly disrupted play throughout the evening and forced the teams into a combined 37 turnovers, although 27 took place over the first 30 minutes, where the difficult conditions were at their peak. Sophomore Tori Bruce and senior Regan Littell each caused two turnovers, while Lowrey and Taney each caused two as well.

Union held a 20-9 edge in draw controls with Gerrato corralling a game-high 14. Shanklin and Westerby each earned three to lead Stevens.

Each team picked up 15 ground balls, with Taney leading all players with five and Bruce picking up four to lead the Ducks.

The Ducks only earned two free-position shots, with Bednarski and Westerby each converting their respective attempts. Union was successful on seven of their 13 free-position attempts.

Stevens was successful on 20 of its 22 clearing attempts, while Union converted 18 of their 21 tries. The Ducks committed three penalties on the evening, which led to a pair of Union power-play goals.
