WEEHAWKEN, N.J. (April 30, 2019) – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team split a non-conference doubleheader against Arcadia University Tuesday afternoon at Weehawken Waterfront Park.
The Ducks close out the regular season with an overall record of 21-17, while the Knights head into postseason action with their 28-12 record.
Game One (W, 3-2)
Sophomore
Jessie Masur (3-2) earned the win while senior
Marissa Cappello was credited with her first save of the year. Kylee Schwind fell to 11-7 on the year after giving up three runs in four innings pitched.
The Ducks were the first to score in the first inning when junior
Gina DeOliveira ran in as senior
Katie Tirabassi reached first on a throwing error by the shortstop, which allowed her to advance to third. Junior
Melissa Alfonso brought in the second run of the inning in the following at bat with her RBI single to left center.
In the top of the fourth, Hunter Schantz reached base on fielding error by Tirabassi before Alexis Burge pushed her to second on a sac-bunt. Bekah Good then registered a two-run homer over the right field fence to tie the game at two.
Sophomore
Siobhan Cottell hit the go-ahead home run in the bottom of the inning for the second-straight game to give Stevens a lead they would not relinquish.
The Knights saw an opportunity to take the lead in the top of the fifth as Kristin Cancelliere and Alex DeStefano each singled and Schantz was hit by a pitch to load the bases with just one out. Cappello then took over the circle and Alexis Burge popped up to senior
Julia DeCandia while Good struck out looking to end the inning.
Game Two (L, 4-1)
Brenna Dolan (2-1) earned the win as she allowed just one run in her four innings pitched. Senior
Christine LaRochelle (6-11) was dealt the loss despite her three strikeouts. Mary Pat Murray collected her first save of the season as she pitched the final three innings and prevented the Ducks from tying the score or taking the lead.
Julia Gessner put the Knights on the board with a sac-fly in the top of the second. Jackie Bilotti extended the lead in the third inning with an RBI before DeStefano scored on a passed ball to put Arcadia up 3-0.
Morgan Marchesani brought in the Knights' final run of the day with her infield single in the top of the fourth. Stevens answered in the bottom of the inning when freshman
Gab Poska recorded her first collegiate RBI with a sac-fly that allowed DeOliveira to score.
DeOliveira and Tirabassi both singled to start the bottom of the sixth to give the Ducks a chance to tie game. Alfonso then reached on a fielder's choice as DeOliveira was tagged out at third. Poska followed with a popup to the shortstop and Murray struck out her only batter of the day to send her teammates back to the batter's box.
Inside the Numbers
- Schattin stole the lone base for the Ducks in game one while going 2-for-2 at the plate.
- Cappello collected eight strikeouts across the two games without allowing a hit.
- Poska led Stevens in game two with eight putouts.
- DeOliveira batted .500 in the second game as she went 2-for-4 at the dish.
