WEEHAWKEN, N.J. (May 3, 2019) – The top-seeded Stevens Institute of Technology softball team defeated #4 Nazareth College 1-0 Friday afternoon at Weehawken Waterfront Park in their first game of the Empire 8 Conference Tournament.
The Ducks improved to 22-17 on the year while the Golden Flyers fell to 14-21. Senior
Christine LaRochelle (7-11) earned the win after not giving up a hit in her 5.0 innings pitched and classmate
Marissa Cappello collected her second save of the season as she struck out five batters in just two innings. Gabriella Corasaniti (8-9) tallied three strikeouts despite getting dealt the loss in the circle.
After three quick outs for each team in the first inning, senior
Katie Tirabassi recorded the first hit of the day with a double to center field in the top of the second. The Freehold, New Jersey native advanced to third when junior
Melissa Alfonso bounced out to the shortstop before scoring on an RBI groundout by junior
Abigail Circelli.
Nazareth registered their only hit of the game in the top of the sixth when Mackenzie Kapp singled to left field with just one out. However, the Golden Flyers could not capitalize on their opportunity to score as Cappello struck out the next two batters to keep Naz off the scoreboard.
Inside the Numbers
- Junior Samantha Schattin was the only player to steal a base.
- Junior Gina DeOliveira and senior Julia DeCandia added one hit apiece for Stevens.
- DeCandia was a force on defense today, recording two outs on diving catches and adding two assists.
