HOBOKEN, N.J. (August 31, 2019) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team won the opening set of the match but failed to grab another as they fell 3-1 (25-19, 12-25, 16-25, 9-25) against Johns Hopkins University Saturday at Canavan Arena.
The Blue Jays, who received votes in the AVCA DIII preseason poll, were led by Simone Bliss who posted a double-double with 17 kills and 11 digs. With the win, Johns Hopkins moved to 2-0 on the young season while Stevens dropped to 1-2.

Shelby Stewart and
Kristen Edmiston both tallied seven kills for the Ducks while freshman
Ava Smithing produced four blocks.
The Ducks produced a .333 attack percentage in the 25-19 opening set victory but hit just .043 over the final three sets.
Volleys and Points
- Stevens jumped out to an early 6-2 lead in the opening set thanks in part to three kills by Kristen Edmiston.
- Holding a 13-10 advantage, the Ducks went on a quick 4-0 run to take a commanding lead.
- Johns Hopkins climbed back within six points, but couldn't get any closer as Stevens put the Blue Jays away late in the set.
- The Blue Jays responded in a big way to start the second set, registering 15 of the first 16 points of the set.
- Leading 22-11, Johns Hopkins grabbed three of the final four points of the set to tie the match at a set each.
- With a 9-6 lead in set number three, JHU won six of the next eight points fueled by three kills from Bliss.
- The Blue Jays were able to keep Stevens at arms-length for the remainder of the set.
- The fourth set started much like the second, with JHU jumping out to an early 10-3 lead.
- With the score 14-6, the Blue Jays closed the set and the match on an 11-3 run and grabbed the 3-1 victory.

- Sophomore Kathleen Riegner produced 25 assists and committed just one set error in the match while also adding a kill.

- The Ducks will travel to Montclair, N.J., to participate in the MSU Tri-Match. They will open up the tournament against the United States Merchant Marine Academy at 3:00 p.m.
