HOBOKEN, N.J. (Sept. 20, 2019) –
Sara Hain produced a pair of matches with double digit kills as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 match to Stockton University before bouncing back to defeat Cabrini University 3-1 Friday in day one of the Ducks Classic inside Canavan Arena.
Hain had started the day with 10 kills in the opening game against Stockton and followed it up with a 13-kill performance while hitting .632 in the win over Cabrini. The Ducks moved to 4-6 on the season while the Ospreys improved to 11-2 and the Cavaliers fell to 4-7.
The games were also highlighted by three double-doubles in two contests for Stevens as
Kathleen Riegner and
Casey King both accomplished the feat.
Riegner had 22 assists and 10 digs in game one and added 42 assists and 12 digs in the second match. The sophomore from Monroe, N.Y., also added a pair of service aces in each match as well as a career-high four blocks in the win over Cabrini.
King, meanwhile, had 12 digs to go along with 11 kills for her first double-double of the season in the victory over Cabrini. A senior out of Wallington, N.J., King now has 21 double-doubles in her career.
Volleys and Points (Match One)
- The Ospreys started the opening set by grabbing an early 9-2 lead, highlighted by back-to-back service aces by Natalie Miller.
- Trailing 16-7, the Ducks began to climb back into it after rattling off five straight points to cut the deficit to four.
- Stockton extended their lead back to 10 by winning six straight points, but Stevens would not go away, grabbing seven of the next eight points.
- The Ospreys ultimately grabbed the set in the end to take home a 25-20 set victory.
- The two teams traded points early in the second set, with neither team leading by more than three points.
- With the set tied at 20, Stockton was able to pull away late by closing the second set on a 5-1 run to win 25-21.
- After the Ospreys took a 7-3 early lead in set three, the Ducks battled into the contest and tied the game at 11.
- Stockton closed the contest strong, however, grabbing 14 of the final 16 points to win the set 25-13 and the match 3-0.
Match Point (Match One)
- The Ospreys won the final set of the match when Sara Walsh finished off her team-high ninth kill of the match.
Inside the Numbers (Match One)
- The Ospreys hit .224 in the match while the Ducks had a .152 attack percentage.
- Stockton was able to take advantage at the service line, holding a 12-4 advantage in service aces.
- Sara Hain led Stevens offensively with 10 kills and a .304 attack percentage.
Unsung Hero (Match One)
- Freshman Ava Smithing hit .455 while tying her season-high of seven kills. It is the second straight game with seven kills for Smithing.
Volleys and Points (Match Two)
- After the Ducks grabbed the first four points of set one, the Cavaliers immediately responded with five consecutive points of their own to take a 5-4 lead.
- With Cabrini leading 17-15, Stevens rattled off seven consecutive points after a pair of kills from Hain and back-to-back aces from Shelby Stewart.
- With the score 22-20, the Ducks were able to grab the last three points of the set, capped off by a service ace from Enkhsanaa Enkhbayar.
- Tied at eight, Stevens used a quick 5-1 run to force a Cabrini timeout and create a little breathing room.
- The Ducks were able to keep the Cavaliers at arms-length for the remainder of the set, never relinquishing the lead en rout to a 25-21 victory.
- Cabrini did not go away quietly, however, using an early 7-0 run to take a 9-4 lead in set two.
- Trailing 22-16 late in the set, Stevens clawed their way back into it by registering six consecutive points to tie the contest.
- After Stevens was able to take a 24-23 lead, the Cavaliers responded by scoring the final three points to send the match to a fourth set.
- The teams traded points for the beginning portion of the fourth and final set.
- Stevens took advantage of two kills each from Smithing and King and used a 6-0 run to grab a 15-10 edge.
- Cabrini was able to cut the deficit to three at 21-18 but could not come any closer as Stevens closed the door to win the match 3-1.
Match Point
- The final point of the match came when Riegner was able to dump a ball over the top of the defense for her second kill of the contest.
Inside the Numbers
- Stevens held a stark advantage at the point of attack, out-blocking Cabrini 10-4 and holding a 56-44 edge in kills.
- The Ducks hit .250 in the match including hitting a match-best .333 in the fourth set to seal the victory.
- Hain, Ava Smithing and King all registered double-digit kills with 13, 12 and 11, respectively. Hain was also a perfect 8-for-8 on kills to start the match.
- Jillian Roumbanis was solid defensively, producing a team-high 19 digs to go along with six assists.
Unsung Heros
- Both Stewart and sophomore Corinne Dougherty were solid in the match, each producing nine total kills.
- Stewart was able to hit .333 in the match while adding four service aces and four blocks.
- Dougherty, meanwhile, had a .240 attack percentage.

- "Persistence and mental toughness were the name of the game today. Cabrini put up a great fight and we were tested throughout the day, but I was really proud of how we pulled through."
- "Our offense came alive and our passing game got us the ball back in some very clutch moments. We're excited to keep this momentum and good feeling going into tomorrow."

- The Ducks will close out the Ducks Classic with a contest against SUNY-New Paltz at 1:00 p.m.
- The Hawks hold a narrow 6-5 advantage in the series between the two teams. Stevens was able to take the last matchup 3-1 on Sept. 12, 2018.
