HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 24, 2019) – Four different players found the back of the net to lead RV/RV Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer to a 4-1 victory over Vassar College Tuesday evening, in a non-conference fixture played at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.
Sophomores
Fiona Matthews and
Ally Wanzor joined freshman
Olivia Panko and senior
Gabby Saade in finding the back of the net for the Ducks, who improved to 4-3-1. Stevens moved to 10-4-1 all-time against Vassar. The teams have played the last eight matches in the series in Hoboken.
Emma Tanner scored in the 19th minute for Vassar, who fell to 3-4-1. Savannah Cutler sent a looping shot on goal, however, the ball appeared to get caught in the winds and floated over the outstretched arms of junior Erka McCarthy and, instead, rang off the crossbar. Tanner collected the rebound and beat McCarthy for her fourth of the year.
Matthews opened scoring in the fourth minute. Saade did the heavy lifting on the play, weaving her way through the Vassar defense. The West Windsor, New Jersey native, who has collected at least one point in three straight matches, played a perfectly-placed ball across the 18-yard box to Matthews, who solidly struck the ball with her right foot into the net for her second goal of the season. Matthews collected six goals one season ago.
Panko netted what would prove to be the game-winner in the 36th minute. The Ducks went on a counterattack after a Vassar turnover and transitioned into the attacking third. Freshman
Julia Cairns played a ball left-to-right across the box. A Vassar defender attempted to break up the play, but simply slowed the ball down before Panko collected it and sent it sailing into the back of the net.
Saade and Wanzor broke the game open in the early portion of the second half. Junior
Kaitlyn Casiano played a crossing ball from the near sideline in the 51st minute that Saade was able to find through a crowd of people. The West Windsor, New Jersey native headed the crossing pass just inside the left post for her team-leading fifth goal. The Ducks added to their lead just 2:16 later, when Wanzor wound up and delivered a strike from just outside the 18 that easily beat Vassar goalkeeper Fiona Walsh. Wanzor's second of the year occurred just moments after a crucial moment in the match where a Brewer goal was disallowed following a foul on McCarthy.
McCarthy made three saves to earn the win for Stevens, while Walsh stopped a pair of shots in suffering the loss.
Turning Point
- Panko's goal opened a two-goal lead for the Ducks in the 51st minute.
- Vassar quickly went on the offensive and earned a corner.
- Cutler took the corner kick and Tanner fired a shot on goal from close proximity that McCarthy deflected.
- While players coming together for the rebound, a second Vassar scoring attempt appeared to trickle across the line, however the goal was eventually disallowed after a brief discussion among the field personnel, because a Brewer fouled McCarthy during the battle for the loose ball.
- The Ducks came down the field on the next possession and Wanzor put the game out of reach with her second marker of the year.
Inside the Numbers
- Stevens held a 21-14 margin in shots, including a 12-7 edge in the first half. The team fired 22 shots in last year's meeting with the Brewers.
- Wanzor led all players with five shots, with two registering on frame. Tanner and Cutler each took four attempts to pace Vassar.
- Vassar took five corners, while Stevens earned just three.
- Sophomore Ginger Harris earned her first start of the season.
- Matthews finished with a goal and an assist for her first multi-point outing of the season and fourth of her career.
- Casiano's assist was the first of her 2019 campaign and fifth of her career.
- Saade has recorded at least one point in six of the team's eight matches.
Unsung Hero
- Saade's speed proved challenging for the Brewers, creating several chances in the first half.
From the Sidelines (Head Coach Jeff Parker)
- "Some outstanding moments this evening from our squad and finishing four tiems on the night is what we are looking for. We knew that we had to be ready for Vassar and starting strong at the start of both halves was really key for us tonight. [The] schedule doesn't get any easier, but we're preparing and will be ready for challenges ahead."
