Elizabeth Chu produced two straight contests with at least 15 digs as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team fell 3-1 to RV Susquehanna and 3-0 against No. 20 Wesleyan Saturday in the final day of the River Hawk Invitational at Orlando W. Houts Gymnasium.
The losses for the Ducks snap a four-game winning streak as they drop to 7-8 overall on the year.
For Susquehanna, Sydney Portale racked up 18 kills and Rosina Esposito had a double-double to lead the River Hawks as they grabbed a 21-25, 18-25, 25-23, 25-23 victory to improve to 14-3.
Wesleyan, meanwhile, got 10 kills from Maddie Kurke to win 23-25, 17-25, 24-26 and move 9-2 this season.
After two contests with 13 and 12 kills, respectively, King has now picked up at least 10 kills in five of her last six contests. The reigning MAC Freedom Defensive Player of the Week also produced a double-double with a season-high 13 kills and 13 digs against Susquehanna.
Chu also had a productive day for the Ducks on the defensive side of the ball, picking up 18 digs against Susquehanna and 15 digs versus Wesleyan.
Volleys and Points (Match One)
- Tied at 5-5 in the opening set, the River Hawks were able to create some separation with a 5-1 run.
- The Ducks were able to climb back into the back, cutting the deficit to 19-17 late in the set.
- Susquehanna put the contest away late, winning three of the final four points to take home a 25-21 win.
- The River Hawks came out firing in the second set, taking an early 8-2 lead.
- Stevens responded quickly, using a 6-2 lead to make the score 10-8.
- Leading 11-9, Susquehanna again created separation with a 7-2 run.
- The River Hawks cruised for the remainder of the set, taking a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-18 set win.
- Holding an 8-7 edge in the third set, the Ducks rattled off five consecutive points to grab the edge.
- After Susquehanna was able to get back into the set and take a 21-20 lead, Stevens responded by closing the stanza on a 5-2 run to win the set.
- Stevens opened the fourth set strong, taking an early 9-4 lead.
- The River Hawks were able to claw their way back into the set with a 7-2 run to tie the match at 13.
- The two teams traded points back-and-forth for most of the rest of the set, but Susquehanna was able to win the match with a 5-2 run.
Match Point (Match One)
- Brooke LeCesa was able to notch her 16th kill of the match to grab the 3-1 victory.
- Inside the Numbers (Match One)
- Shelby Stewart led the Ducks with 14 kills in the match while hitting .379.
- Sara Hain also had double-digit kills for Stevens with 12 to go along with a pair of blocks while hitting .423.
- Susquehanna was able to hit .316 in the match while Stevens had a .243 attack percentage.
- The double-double for King was her fourth in the past seven games.
- Jillian Roumbanis picked up double-digit digs for the third straight match with 14.
Unsung Hero (Match One)
- Corinne Dougherty hit .333 with eight kills in the contest to go along with a service ace and two digs.
Volleys and Points (Match Two)
- The Cardinals started the match with a quick 4-0 run to take an early 6-2 lead.
- Trailing 14-7, Stevens got back into the match with a 5-0 run.
- After Wesleyan stretched the lead back to six, the Ducks answered once again with a 9-2 run to take a 22-21 lead.
- The Cardinals were not to be denied, however, winning the final three points of the set to take a 1-0 lead.
- Wesleyan used a 5-0 run early in the second set to take an 8-5 lead.
- Leading 17-15, Wesleyan pulled away late with an 8-2 run and won the set 25-17.
- Trading points early in set number three, the Cardinals once again rattled off five straight points and led 11-9.
- Stevens produced a 7-0 run of their own and took a five-point lead halfway through the set.
- The five-point lead quickly disappeared as Wesleyan tied the match at 17 with a 5-0 run.
- After the Ducks fought off one set point at 24-23, the Cardinals were able to put the set away win back-to-back points to sweep the match.
Match Point (Match Two)
- Wesleyan took advantage of an attack error by Dougherty to win the set in extra time.
Inside the Numbers (Match Two)
- Stevens was fantastic at the point of the attack, holding a 7-0 edge in blocks.
- The Cardinals held a .237-.145 advantage in attack percentage, including hitting .375 in the final set.
- Kathleen Riegner had a double-double in the loss with 25 assists and 11 digs.
- Along with 12 kills, King had eight digs in the contest, good for second on the team.
Unsung Hero (Match Two)
- Enkhsanaa Enkhbayar was all over the court in the second match, producing eight digs, six assists, four service aces and a pair of kills while hitting .667.
Chasing History
- Shelby Stewart produced four kills in two matches on the day, putting her at 415 for her career. She now sits just 14 blocks from breaking Maggie Kowalska's school record of 428.
- Hain hit .311 in the two contests on the day, putting her season attack percentage at .415 and her career percentage at .339. If the season ended today, the senior from Roseville, Minnesota would break both the single-season and career records for attack percentage.

- "We've had a very tough schedule and fought some hard battles, unfortunately not coming out on the other side as winners. We're seeing a lot of really good things from our offense, and once we're able to put it all together we're going to be a force."
