HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 7, 2019) – Sophomore
Fiona Matthews and junior
Kaitlyn Casiano each recorded a goal, but No. 24/13 Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer played to a 2-2 draw with No. 16/10 Johns Hopkins University Saturday, in the opening match of the 2019 Engineering Cup.
Sophomore
Izzy DiDario and junior
Erika McCarthy each made four saves for the Ducks, who evened their record at 1-1-1.
Emily Maheras and Molly Reich each scored for Johns Hopkins, who dropped to 2-1-1. With the tie, Stevens continues to lead the all-time series 2-1-1, and remains unbeaten against the Blue Jays in Hoboken.
Matthews opened scoring in the 18th minute. Senior Gaaby Saade had her shot blocked by the Hopkins defense. Matthews quickly reacted and pounced on the loose ball. The New Milford, New Jersey native was able to keep the play continuous, and beat Hopkins netminder Caitlin Hendricks to give Stevens an early lead. The lead withstood a Hopkins push early in the second half, before Reich's header in the 74th minute evened the score.
Casiano netted her first career goal in the 81st minute, putting Stevens ahead for the second time in the match. The junior defender took a shot from well outside the 18. The ball rattled off the crossbar and bounced across the line, however, the ball briefly remained in play. Matthews quickly joined the play and fired off a shot that Hendricks deflected and a third Stevens shot appeared to finally go into the net, but the center referee blew the play dead and signaled that the original shot had crossed the line after ricocheting off the crossbar. The marker was Casiano's first in 41 career matches.
Following a pair of scoreless overtime frames that cemented the draw, Hopkins got the better of a penalty shootout to earn four points in the Engineering Cup standings. Stevens earned three points for suffering the loss via penalties, however, the official result of the match remained a draw.
Hendricks matched DiDario and McCarthy's efforts and made four saves for Johns Hopkins.
Turning Point
- On the next possession following Casiano's goal, Casiano committed a foul inside the box and was issued a yellow card.
- Maheras took the ensuing penalty kick and found the back of the net, drawing the teams even at two.
Inside the Numbers
- Johns Hopkins held a 27-14 edge in shots, although the margin was just 10-6 for the Blue Jays in shots on net.
- Maggie Coulson led all players with six shots, although just two were on target. Matthews and sophomore Ally Wanzor each took three attempts to pace Stevens.
- Junior Anna Vidovich made her season debut.
- Hopkins had a 12-7 advantage in corner kicks.
Unsung Heroes
- Excellent positioning by Stevens defensive corps, both inside the box and just outside the 18, kept 2018 Centennial Conference Rookie of the Year Rachel Jackson off the scoresheet.
From the Sidelines (Head Coach Jeff Parker)
- "Really good contest to be a part of today - two teams going for it and it's great to see positive-attacking soccer - when you play opponents like that, it makes you raise your game. We are the type of program that schedules teams like that to help us grow and develop. Right back at it tomorrow."
