No. 24/13 Women’s Soccer Returns to Winning Ways with 4-0 Victory Over St. John Fisher

Saade nets game-winner, Panko scores twice, as Ducks top Cardinals.

HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 8, 2019)  – Senior Julia Panko scored twice to lead No. 24/13 Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer to a 4-0 victory over St. John Fisher College Sunday on the final day of competition in the 16th Annual Engineering Cup.

Panko scored both of her goals in 4:17 span in the second to break the match open. First, the two-time All-American received a Taylor Schaad feed and made a great move around the Fisher defender and deposited the ball into the back of the net. A hand-ball inside the penalty area led to Panko's second marker of the day as the Millstone Township, New Jersey native successfully converted her first penalty kick of the season. Panko converted all three of her penalties one season ago.

Senior Gabby Saade had the lone marker in the first half and freshman Olivia Panko registered her first career goal for Stevens, who improved to 2-1-1 on the young season. The victory moved Stevens to 13-1 all-time against its former Empire 8 Conference rival. The Ducks have taken nine straight matches in the series.

Junior Erika McCarthy and sophomore Izzy DiDario combined for two saves in the spinning the Ducks' first clean sheet of the season. Lila Platt stopped five shots, including four in the first half, for the Cardinals. After a season-opening victory over Babson, the Cardinals have dropped three straight.

No. 16/10 Johns Hopkins University defeated New York University 3-0 in the final match of the tournament to clinch the Engineering Cup. Hopkins' Emily Maheras scored on a penalty kick for the second straight day and was named the tournament's Most Valuable Offensive Player. Stevens' Kaitlyn Casiano took home the weekend's Most Valuable Defensive Player honors for marshalling the Stevens defense. Of note, Hopkins' win over the Violets was the first on the DeBaun Athletic Complex turf for the nationally-ranked Blue Jays.

Turning Point
  • After nearly connecting in the opening minute on a play that was whistled offside, sophomore Nicole Veraja successfully sprung Saade free along the right sideline with a perfectly-place through ball in the seventh minute.
  • Saade exploded down the pitch and deked Platt, who had moved off her line, and the West Windsor, New Jersey native simply slotted the ball into the back of the net to open scoring.

Inside the Numbers
  • Stevens outshot St. John Fisher, 25-8. The Ducks took 12 attempts in the first half and 13 in the second as the broke the match open. Nine of Stevens' 25 attempts were on net.
  • Stevens earned nine corners in the match, including six in the opening stanza. The Cardinals took just one in each half.
  • Sophomore Shay McCarthy drew her first career start.
  • Freshman Julia Cairns made her collegiate debut in the first half.
  • The combined shutout was the seventh for the pairing of DiDario and McCarthy. The duo combined for six in 2018.

Unsung Hero
  • A key cog in the defensive unit, Veraja was a facilitator on offense, playing several through balls that sprung players free across the midfield. Her first-half assist was the first point of her collegiate career.

From the Sidelines (Head Coach Jeff Parker)
  • "Good performance today on the second day of our second back-to-back. [I] thought we struggled at times to connect and impose our will on the match, but when we found our feet, we were able to find space and finish a few chances. [We are] looking forward to a solid week of preparation as we get ready for another big weekend."

Up Next
  • No. 24/13 Stevens returns to the pitch Friday evening for a non-conference tilt at No. 14/14 Swarthmore. It will be the first of two straight matches against nationally-ranked opponents.
  • Stevens is 0-1 all-time against the Garnet, falling last season 2-0 at Clothier Field Stadium. It will be the second consecutive meetings between the programs in Pennsylvania, although Swarthmore did participate in last season's Engineering Cup.
