SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (March 11, 2020) – Senior
Kyra Bednarski scored five goals and dished out five assists to become the program's all-time leader in career assists as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team defeated Union College 14-6 Wednesday in a non-conference game played at Frank Bailey Field.
Bednarski's six assists brought the Syracuse, New York native's career total to 112, moving the four-year attackwoman past alumna Liz Mather, who totaled 110 between 2005-08. She currently has 317 career points and needs 48 more to move into sole possession of second place on the program's career scoring leaderboard.
Additionally, sophomore
Meredith Conlin caused seven turnovers to break a single-game program record. The Cortlandt Manor, New York native was one of five student-athletes that shared the previous record of six. Conlin has established a new career-high in caused turnovers in four of her five games this season.
Senior
Hannah Condren recorded her first hat trick of the season and sophomore
Natalie Fitzpatrick and freshman
Maddie Schmidt each scored two goals for the Ducks, who improved to 3-2 on the season. The Ducks improved to 2-1 all-time against the Dutchwomen.
Lindsay Gerrato and Sydney McParlton combined for five goals for Union, who fell to 2-2. The Dutchwomen have alternated wins and losses over their first games of the season.
"Great team win today!" said head coach
Karen Shaddock. "So proud of everyone's performance and ability to make adjustments from Saturday. We have been working hard as a team and were able to put it all together."
"Everyone was a threat on offense and we were able to set each other up for success," the second-year head coach continued. "Kyra had a great game and did what she is good at. She was able to draw a lot of pressure and find openings for her teammates."
Sophomore
Morgan Westerby and freshman
Julieann Murphy also found the back of the net for the Ducks and sophomore
Maeve McGovern tallied an assist to round out Stevens' scoring.
Junior
Peyton Taylor drew the start and made four saves to earn the victory. Sophomore
Lauren Cunniff relieved in the second half and stopped four shots for the third straight game. Ellie Taney started for Union and ade threed saves. Jenna Paszek stopped two shots over the final 11:34 in relief for the Dutchwomen.
After Fitzpatrick corralled the opening draw control, Stevens jumped out in front when the Annandale, New Jersey native converted a Bednarski pass to give the Ducks an early advantage just 107 seconds into the contest. Bednarski would net her first of the game nearly six minutes later to double the Ducks' lead. Westerby extended the lead to three with her four of the year off another Bednarski lead to give the Ducks a comfortable margin nearly 10 minutes into the opening half.
Consecutive goals by Gerrato and Isabel Bush trimmed the Ducks' lead down to one, but a goal from Schmidt and consecutive goals from Bednarski sent the teams into the intermission with Stevens holding a 6-1 lead.
McParlton opened second-half scoring, but the Ducks answered with their second three-goal run of the day to push the margin to six. Condren converted a Bednarski pass for her second goal of the day to answer McParlton's second of the day, before the Ducks put four straight goals on the board to put the game out of reach. Condren completed her hat trick to give Stevens a 14-5 lead, marking the Ducks' largest advantage of the season. Gerrato beat Cunniff for her 15th of the year to round out scoring.
Every shot taken by the Ducks was on target with six players combining for 19 shots and 19 shots on goal. Bednarski paced the team with seven attempts, with Condren taking five. Gerrato led Union with eight.
As a unit, the Ducks registered 12 caused turnovers on 24 Union miscues. In addition to Conlin's record-breaking effort, Fitzpatrick added two, while seniors
Tara Ravoli and
Kayla Buell, along with freshman
Maris Daly each caused one. Bri Stout led Union with three caused turnovers as the Dutchwomen recorded 15 caused turnovers on 25 Stevens miscues.
"Defensively, we made a lot of adjustments from Saturday that looked really good," Shaddock added. "Meredith played great and was able to cause a ton of turnovers because we were all playing s well together and we are going to build off of this. All three goalies played well and played with confidence."
Union out-earned Stevens in ground balls, 26-23. Stout led the Dutchwomen with five and Caroline Hirt added four. Conlin topped Stevens with a career-high seven, while Fitzpatrick scooped up four.
Union had a slim edge in draw controls, with Gerrato securing five of the Dutchwomen's 12. Westerby led Stevens with three draw controls, while Fitzpatrick, Daly and Murphy each earned two as the Ducks finished the afternoon with 10.
The Ducks were successful on 23 of their 28 clearing attempts, while Union was successful on 15 of 19. For the season, Stevens has been successful on 80 percent of its clearing attempts.
"I am so proud of our performance tonight and excited to build from here," Shaddock commented.
Stevens did not score on its only free-position shot of the game, while Union converted two of its four tries from the eight-meter line.
Up Next: Women's Lacrosse is scheduled to play at Massachusetts Institute of Technology on March 14. It is set to be the first-ever meeting between the programs.
