Field Hockey Snaps 11-Game Win Streak with 2-1 Setback Against Arcadia

Ducks remain in first place in the MAC Freedom standings, now in a three-way tie

GLENSIDE, Pa. (Oct. 23, 2021) – For the first time since September 8th, the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team failed to capture a victory as they dropped a 2-1 decision on the road against Arcadia University Saturday afternoon.

The Ducks struck first with a goal from first-year Emily Smart in the second quarter, but could not hold on as they allowed a pair of second half scores to drop to 12-3 overall and 5-1 in MAC Freedom play, snapping their program-record 11-game win streak.

The Knights, meanwhile, used a goal in the 30th minute to tie things up and scored again in the 49th minute to improve to 7-10 this season and 4-2 in conference play.

Stevens remains atop the MAC Freedom standings but is now tied for the No. 1 spot with Misericordia University and Fairleigh Dickson University-Florham with 5-1 records. The Ducks must defeat the Devils in their next contest Wednesday night to win the MAC Freedom Regular Season title and clinch the top spot in the conference tournament.

In the 22nd minute of the contest with the score still 0-0, Smart put the Ducks on top as she collected the ball inside the circle, faked a shot to pull the goalkeeper out of the cage and finished into the bottom right corner to make the score 1-0.

Smart has now scored seven goals this season and now has goals in back-to-back games for the second time this season. The seven scores are the most by a first-year student-athlete since Victoria Alvarez netted 17 in her initial season on Castle Point in 2014.

Coming out of the break, Arcadia was able to tie things up less than 30 seconds into the second half. On a busted play in the circle, Regan Simmons found herself with the ball in front of an open net after a scrum and was able to deposit it into goal.

The score remained 1-1 until the 49th minute when Mickie March was able to make a defender miss in the circle, take a step to the right and fire a shot just under the glove of senior goalkeeper Emily Franco to put the Knights up for the first time all game.

Trying to come from behind, Stevens had a couple of opportunities to tie things up with the best opportunity coming in the 56th minute when Natalie Logan was able to find some room off a penalty corner and fire a shot that nearly found the cage before it was swiped away by Arcadia's Autumn Gahman.

The clock ticked down from there as the Ducks were unable to get another shot off in the final four minutes of game action.

From the Sidelines (Head Coach Meredith Spencer-Blaetz)
  • "Today was a really good learning opportunity for us. Unfortunately we weren't executing in certain areas and just weren't up to the task. We will most certainly take some lessons from today and use it as fuel to take us through the end of the season."
